Make observations Make a list of what you see in front of you. What do you think I am going to do with these materials?

Make conclusions Why did the balloon inflate? Turn and talk with someone near you to come to a conclusion.

Why did the balloon inflate? The hot water caused the air molecules in the water bottle to heat up Heat energy moved from hotter matter to cooler matter Warm air is LESS DENSE than cool air Therefore, warm air molecules will RISE, causing the cool air to SINK The rising of warm air and the sinking of cool air causes the air molecules to go into motion The rising hot air goes into the balloon, causing it to inflate with warm air

Based on the demonstration… How do think hot air balloons work? [think back!]

This is how hot air balloons work!

Wind is air in motion. It is produced by the uneven heating of the earth ’ s surface by the sun. The earth ’ s surface is made of various land and water formations, it absorbs the sun ’ s radiation unevenly. Wind

Warm air, which is less dense than cold air, rises letting cool air move in and replaces that warm air. This movement of air is what makes the wind blow. What causes the wind to blow? Cool air REPLACING warm air.

This process happens in your own home too!

There are two types of wind: Global Wind Local Wind What do you think the difference is between the two?

Let’s keep it local today… Where do you think local winds are most common? HINT: Many of you will vacation there in the Summer!

1.Land heats up faster than water. 2.Warm air over land rises. 3.Air over water moves to shore. 4.Would occur during the day. 5.Named a SEA BREEZE because it comes from the sea. http://www.coolweather.co.uk/ Sea Breeze

1.Land cools off faster than water. 2.Warm air over water rises. 3.Cool air from land takes its place. 4.Would occur at night. 5.Called a LAND BREEZE because the wind is coming from the land. http://www.coolweather.co.uk/ Land Breeze

Warm Cold The land radiates heat back into the air which causes the air to rise. This air then moves over the ocean which cools. This cooled air replaces the warm air and the cycle continues. Sea Breeze

Warm Cold The ocean radiates heat back into the air which causes the air to rise. This air then moves over the land which cools. This cooled air replaces the warm air and the cycle continues. Land Breeze

Critical Thinking Question Jen and Ronda decide to have a bike race. They are riding East along a straight, 5-mile path. Jen and Ronda have both been training for months, together, at the same rate of intensity. They are equal in fitness. 4 miles into the race, Jen stops riding. She is exhausted, but Ronda feels great, and continues to win with ease.

Using the diagram below, determine was allowed Jen to win so easily!
