802.16m Frame structure for intra-system interference management Mariana Goldhamer Alvarion

Sub-frame implications - 1 Frame Structure in C802.16m/08-118r1 –Latency problem is resolved by introducing sub-frames New limitation: everything goes in time domain –Reuse 1 –Reuse 3 –Relays –Legacy support –Coexistence with Bluetooth –Coexistence with 802.11 –Coexistence with UMTS/LTE

Sub-frame implications - 2 Not enough sub-frames in TDD –5 DL –3 UL Limitation of the max. allocation size –1/8 or 12.5% in TDD –2/8 or 25% in FDD Granularity of allocation –20% in TDD –12.5% in FDD

Target of this contribution Flexible Frame structure in both sub-channel and time domains –Increasing the resolution of allocation to 1/Nsubchann 30 subchann – > 3% –More flexibility allowed Separate Reuse 1 and Master/Slave (Reuse 3 or Reuse 4) sub-channel SETs Major group is a SET example Flexible sub-channel allocation per SET Power rules per SETs Broadcast (E-MBS) support as single frequency channel –Harmonization with the multi-frame concept The sub-channel allocation per SET is done at the multi-frame start

SETs and power density SETs consists of a number of sub-channels: –Reuse 1 SETs Broadcast (E-MBS) SET Control/Data SET (C/D SET) Send MAPs for every one of these SETs Send MCH (MAP Control Header) for every sub-channel SET –Master / Slave SETs (Master in Reuse 3 or Reuse 4) Introduce the rule of Master/Slave power control in the sub-channel domain –Each sector has assigned sub-channels to be used at Tx max. power and Rx minimum interference (MASTER SET) –Each sector may use the other sub-channels (SLAVE SET) at lower power, such to not create interference to the Rx MASTER sub-channels

Example of power rules for SETs Sector 3 Sector 2 Sector 1 Sub-channels Max. power density Time Legacy interval Slave SET Master SET Reuse 1 C/D SET Legacy interval Slave SET Master SET Legacy interval Master SET Slave SET Reuse 1 C/D SET Slave SET Reuse 1 C/D SET E-MBS SET

Highlights of the power rules Master/Slave – Control/Data –The max. power is allocated in a Reuse 3 Master/Slave mode Only one sector in a BS can use a SET for Tx at max. power density Only one SET per Sector is guaranteed the min. Rx interference Slave SETs are not allowed to create interference to Master SETs Reuse 1 – E-MBS –Special allocation of a “single frequency” channel, which can use the max. power density Reuse 1 – Control/Data

OFDMA High Level Frame Structure Super-Frame Frame (Frames are numbered F0 to F3) Reuse N Configuration Example: SET 1: Master SET 2: Slave SET 3: Slave Super-Frame Header: System Configuration Information, Paging, other Broadcast Information Broadcast Control SET0 Configuration DL SET 1 Master power rule DL SET 2 Slave rules DL SET 3 Slave rules Preamble DL SETB – Broadcast (E-MBS) MCH0 DL SET 0: Control/Data Reuse 1 MCHB MCH1

Highlights of the Frame structure Separate sub-channel SETs for: –Reuse 1 E-MBS –Reuse 1 Control/Data can span over the un-used E-MBS Set in time-domain –Control/Data in Master/Slave power approach Multi-frame preamble adapted to SET/Zone concepts MCH and MAP are transmitted per each Reuse 1 and Master SET on well known OFDMA coordinates –MCH (Map Control Header), indicating: Used sub-channels for the SET STC used for MAP transmission Modulation/coding for the MAP of the SET Type of the SET: Reuse 1 control/data, Reuse 1 E-MBS, Master –MAP of the SET, containing the control information SET flexibility in the sub-channel domain –The number of sub-channels allocated to a SET can be changed every multi- frame

DL SETs and Multi-Frame - FDD Highlight: Full and flexible channel usage in both freq and time domains Example: SET1 is Master Multi-frame Preamble MCH0 MCHB MCH1 DL SET 1 Master power rule DL SET 2 Slave power rule DL SET 3 Slave power rule DL SETB – E-MBS DL SET 1 Master power rule DL SET 2 Slave power rule DL SET 3 Slave power rule DL SETB – E-MBS DL SET 0: Control/Data Reuse 1 DL SET 0: Control/Data Reuse 1 C/DC/D DL SET 1 Master power rule DL SET 2 Slave power rule DL SET 3 Slave power rule DL SETB – E-MBS DL SET 0: Control/Data Reuse 1 C/DC/D DL SET 1 Master power rule DL SET 2 Slave power rule DL SET 3 Slave power rule DL SETB – E-MBS DL SET 0: Control/Data Reuse 1 Control/ Data Frame Preamble Frame Preamble Frame Preamble Multi-frame Preamble DL SET 1 Master power rule DL SET 2 Slave power rule DL SET 3 Slave power rule DL SETB – E- MBS DL SET 0: Control/Data Reuse 1 Frame Control C/DC/D Broadcast Control SET0 Configuration Reuse N Configuration

Conclusion This proposal –Resolves the sub-frame availability problem –Resolves the allocation granularity problem –Resolves the max. allocation problem – Enhances the 802.16m Frame Structure capabilities for increased spectral efficiency, reduced intra-system interference and support for E-MBS Services Text for SSD – in the base contribution
