3 Enlightenment Started 1700-1750 Beliefs must be based on reason If everyone applies the correct principles of reason, all will come to the same conclusions Tradition or authority are no longer an acceptable source of answers Before Enlightenment, the identity was clear: God is up there; we are down here If we are good, God rewards us, if we are bad He punishes us

8 The Question of Identity: Who is Jesus? The person of Jesus precedes the doctrines of Jesus. The doctrines of Jesus are important because of who Jesus is. Christianity = Jesus If Adventism = Christianity => Adventism = Jesus Biblical Identity

9 The role of a doctrine is to deepen my relationship with Jesus, to make it more practical, liveable. To make me a more loving, gracious and tolerant person. In that sense, doctrines are important! Biblical Roles of Doctrines

10 The importance of the Trinity Doctrine 1) 1844-1888 – Unimportant; (suspicious) 2) 1888-1956 – Proper understanding of Trinity needed for proper Soteriology 3) 1956- now – Essence of Ultimate Reality is relationships Trinity in Adventism

11 Who needs the Judgment? 1) 1844-1888 – God, in order to know who to save 2) 1888-1956 – I, in order to get to heaven 3) 1956- now – ?? The universe, in order to see God’s fairness so that His government is ultimately vindicated Judgment in Adventism
