14  There are a number of equipment and supplies that will be necessary for the book repair programme.  Some of the items we can make, but we will need to buy some tools and equipment from a reputable supplier. Book Repair Programme – Equipment and Supplies

16 Care handling and storage of books o Slovenly, haphazard, overcrowded condition will eventually damage the material

17 Care handling and storage of books - Actions o Improvements to Environment – temperature/humidity o Remove direct sunlight with UV o Regular Cleaning to remove dust, dirt and other substances from handling o Institute proper shelving habits o Purchase materials (book ends etc.)

18 Sorting /shelving of materials  Book ends must be used to support

19 Improve poor shelving habits o Items not shelf in an upright position o Books placed with fore edge down will damage spine and joints o Soft cover distort o text block pulling away o Shelf packed too tight

20 Improve poor shelving habits o Users tend to pull the head caps to get to the book, hence damage to the spine and further damage to the item

21 Trolleys o The preferred method for moving books and other library materials o Books should be stacked upright o Books should not protrude beyond the edge of the trolley shelves

22 Trolleys o Books should not be on top of each other on the shelves or trolleys.

23 Shelving Oversize Items o Should be shelved on the their tail or flat o Never place them on their fore-edge o Avoid shelving short books next to tall books as the small one will not be properly be supported o Do not allow the items to protrude into the aisle
