The Use of Simulation with Advanced Practice Nursing Students Monique Veney NURS 530 September 30, 2014

What is Simulation? “A near representation of an actual life event, which can be presented through different methods such as computer software, case studies, written clinical scenarios, live actors, role playing, games, or mannequins” (Khalaila (2013, p. 252). Simulation is an ACTIVE LEARNING strategy that helps students better retain knowledge

Goals of Simulation Provides students with experiences that mimic actual clinical situations Allows students to learn in a safe, “judgment-free” environment Enriches the nursing program curriculum

Benefits of Simulation Students exposed to rare clinical situations Student can manage patients without risks to actual human Student can manage patients without risks to actual human Student able to participate in provider or team leader role Students may repeat experience for more practice Student can practice patient and family-centered care Students are able to practice clinical reasoning skills Faculty able to assess students “in action” and evaluate clinical reasoning judgments Helps identify gaps in knowledge Provides student- focused/centered learning

Relevance to Nursing Education Creates a positive, imaginative student-centered learning environment Provides clinical learning time in lieu of traditional experiences Embraces the push toward use of technology

Nurse Educator Responsibility Preparation of simulation experience scenario Facilitation of simulation experience Guide the simulation experienceDEBRIEFING!!!

Social/Political Influence Simulation uses a technology-based methodology to achieve same outcomes as traditional learning experiences without the risks to patient safety

Emphasis in Nursing Practice Nurse Anesthetists Nurse Midwives Psychiatric Mental Health NPs Family NPs

Implications for Nursing Practice Nurse educators have to become more knowledgeable about simulation use Future nurses have a broader skill set Future nurses have opportunity for more clinical time Patient care is enhanced
