First order of business: Paperwork, etc. CERN Registration  ID card Computer accounts Register laptops, tablets, mobile phones Living in CERN: Everyone checked in to hostel/apartment? Transportation: o Bikes: CERN bike rental, purchase (need helmet and lock!) o Public transportation: Y bus, 18 Tram o 49 CHF/month for junior pass (<24), 75 CHF/month for adult pass o Car? Probably not, make friends with a local that has one! Food: 2 restaurants on campus, cooking facilities at the hostel, supermarkets in Meyrin, St. Genis, and Thoiry, many restaurants in the area tpg.ch

Moss - 3 More practicalities CERN market: A secure version of craigslist for CERN users Purchase cars, bikes, household goods, electronics, etc. Language: English is the scientific language at CERN But not everyone speaks English, do NOT expect it Learn French! Create practice groups (lunches?), learn a new phrase every day… Phones: Need GSM phone for European networks Look into International plans for your phone or… Prepaid plans from French/Swiss companies (Swisscom, Orange, Sunrise, etc.)

Moss - 4 Working at CERN Many different research groups are active You are part of the ATLAS Collaboration Everyone has been assigned a Mentor who will direct their summer research and be your guide while here Get in touch with them ASAP! Where will you work? If available, your mentor may have space in an office If not, there are other options: Bats. 510, 40, 42 Library is always open, quiet, and cool!

5 J. Moss - 5 Some advice: We understand that you are not particle physics experts and do not expect you to be. But we do expect you to work hard and to learn as much as possible! Do not be a loner! If you have trouble or have questions: You are surrounded by like-minded undergraduate students, graduate students, post-docs, staff scientists and faculty  We have all been where you are! 6 J. Moss - 6 Just a bit more….. What is expected of you: Attend the weekly CSU ATLAS meeting: Fridays 12:30-14:00 (Except next week!) Attend the Summer Student Lecture Series (June 28 – Aug 5, 9am-12:30, daily)Summer Student Lecture Series Be sure you understand what your mentor expects of you: (hours, attend meetings) If you will miss work, let your mentor know. Work hard! Only a limited number of students get this opportunity! Don’t forget to have fun too! CERN clubs: soccer, fitness, frisbee, softball, music, solar, biking and many more! CERN clubs Be on the lookout for summer student activities: parties, trips, etc.
