4 The Summer Intensive ESL Institute (SIEI) is a short-duration program designed to increase the English proficiency of adult academic professionals, including: University Professors and Researchers University English as a Second Language (ESL)Instructors Administrative Professionals Tompkins Cortland Community College, State University of New York

5 . Participants of the Summer Intensive English Institute will: Improve use of spoken and written English. Improve communication strategies in a variety of formal and informal settings Attend workshops designed to improve English for the professional setting Learn strategies for networking and researching in the global academic/professional environment Have opportunities to visit some of the attractions of the Central New York/Finger Lakes Region, including Niagara Falls Tompkins Cortland Community College, State University of New York

6 PROGRAM COMPONENTS 1. Pre-Program Online Homework (April-June, 2013) 2. 7 Important SIEI Dates, Pre-Arrival: Now to the end of December – Interested people take Accuplacer. All must test into ESL 101 to qualify! February 12 - Universities submit FINAL LIST of participants March 1 – Participants submit application, curriculum vitae (CV) or professional resume (in English) and the photo page of passport March 15 –TC3 makes final selection of participants and sends I-20s. Pre-Program Online Homework begins By April 10 – Participants arrange to go to US Consulate to apply for visa Housing Contract and Health Forms sent to TC3 By April 30 – Flight information of all participants sent to TC3 May 31 – Pre-Program Online Homework concludes

8 Important SIEI Dates, Post-Arrival: Saturday, June 8 -- Arrival to JFK Airport in New York City and shuttle bus to Dryden (4-5 hours by bus or car from New York City) Saturday July 13 – Departure from Dryden and shuttle bus to JFK Airport NOTE: The cost of the SIEI program includes a shuttle bus to and from JFK Airport only, not to any other airports in or near New York City. The shuttle is available only on these designated dates. People traveling to different airports or on different days must arrange and pay for their own transportation to TC3. 12 Tompkins Cortland Community College, State University of New York “Placement Level” into English Academic Writing and Speaking courses might be based on several factors: Accuplacer scores Application submissions such as CV/Resume and Statement of Purpose Any prior experience in an English-speaking country The level of the other applicants for 2013 program The discretion of TC3 staff We’ll do our best to insure that everyone is placed at the appropriate level!

Placement in these will be based on: Participant’s preference English level Professional area of interest and need The discretion of TC3 staff We’ll do our best to insure that everyone is placed in the right Professional Development Workshop!

14 ON-CAMPUS HOUSING AT TC3 SIEI participants will be housed in one of the 7 residence halls on campus. 10-minute walk from the Main Building and the Athletic Center TC3 residence halls are apartment-style, containing: o a shared kitchen, o shared bathroom and o living area and o four private bedrooms o linens and cooking supplies provided Participants will live with other SIEI students! 15 SIEI 2013 Program Cost $2850 Cost Includes: Pre-Program Online Homework component Shuttle-to/from JFK Airport on designated dates Housing, linens and basic apartment supplies for cooking Academic English classes and most course materials (16 hours per week) English for Professional Purposes (2 hours per week, minimum) Professional Development Workshops (1-2 hours per week) Some program-related trips or excursions: Niagara Falls, outlet mall, local wineries Cayuga Lake Cruise at program end

16 Tompkins Cortland Community College, State University of New York Additional Costs to Consider Roundtrip airfare to/from JFK Airport Visa-related expenses -- $200+ Food Some apartment supplies: A pillow, a fan, etc. Entertainment: restaurant meals, transportation and travel (optional) that you arrange yourself Shopping and souvenirs Local bus fare ($4/round-trip to and from Ithaca, the largest nearby city) A mobile phone or phone cards for making long-distance calls Weekend travel you arrange Extra items or activities that you pay for yourself
