2 TYPES OF MAPS Physical Maps- shows landforms such as mountains, hills, plains, lakes, oceans, and rivers. Political Maps -shows the borders of countries, states, & territories. Also shows national capitals. Population Maps- shows where people live.

3 How to Read a Map A.Legend or Key- it will explain the symbols, lines, and colors on the map B.Scale- shows the distance—always use miles C.Compass Rose- shows the directions (north, south, east, & west) D.Title & Labels- explains the main idea (topic) of the map.

4 The Legend & Scale The legend is also called the key. It is the secret code to the map The scale shows distance on a map. Always use miles to measure!

6 The Compass Rose This is an example of a compass rose. N,S, E, and W are referred to as the cardinal directions. NE, NW, SE, & SW are referred to as intermediate directions

7 Title & Labels The title of a map is just like a title of a book. It gives you an idea about what the map explains The labels on words on a map explain or point out items on a map. For example names of countries on a map are written in all CAPITAL letters.

8 Title Key Notice how the countries are labeled in all capital letters!

10 Parts of the Earth Equator- imaginary line that divides the Earth into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. It measures 0° Prime Meridian- imaginary line that divides the Earth into the Western and Eastern Hemispheres. It measures 0°

12 Hemisphere-is half of the Earth
