2 What is Sociology? Sociology refers to the study of society, focusing on the organisation of social life. Sociology provides insights into the ways factors such as class, wealth, race, gender, ethnicity, culture, age, sexuality, social change and religion shape people’s lives.

3 What is Sociology? Most importantly, sociology is a perspective on the social world that values critical thinking. Sociologists question the common sense and popular explanations of social life and look at the dynamics of power and inequality in everyday life

4 What is Sociology? As a sociology student you will not be provided with quick answers. What you will discover is how to think about issues for yourself: What are the questions behind the questions?

6 The World We Live In A brief look at some of the stories that gained significant media exposure in 2012 gives an insight into the diverse nature of the Social and Cultural World. Your challenge as a Society and Culture student is to analyse the world we live in from an academic perspective. What do each of the following slides demonstrate about the nature of the Social and Cultural World? The key to social and cultural analysis lies in making effective use of COURSE CONCEPTS.

15 ANALYSIS of 2012 Task 1: Annotate each image with key concepts that apply to each slide. Task 2: In your groups create three inquiry questions for each slide. Record these on a text box on the next slide after each image. For Example: Why does a viral video such as ‘Gangnam Style’ generate such widespread public interest?

16 Choose 5 images that reflect the top issues and events from 2013. Create a slide for each as set out for 2012. Task 3: Annotate each image with key concepts that apply to each slide.
