Why does the spoon feel warm?

Heat transfer Heat can travel from one place to another. Heat travels differently through solids, liquids and gases. What are solids, liquids and gases? What is the differences between them? Do you know any examples?

How does heat travel through a solid? - Clamp stand - Piece of iron - Timer - Bunsen burner - Vaseline - Rivets - Ruler 27 24 21 18 15 12 9 6 3 0 Distance from end in cm

Investigation Distance from end (cm) Time fallen off (min) Light Bunsen burner Turn to blue flame and place at end of iron rod Immediately start timer Record the time each rivet falls off

Can you come up with a scientific theory? How does heat travel through a solid? How does it get from one end to the other? 1

In your jotter... Heat Heat is a form of energy. It can travel through solids, liquids and gases. Conduction (stick in ‘rivets’ results table) Heat travels through solids by conduction. As a solid is heated its particles begin to vibrate. Heat travels as the vibrations are passed from particle to particle just like a ‘Mexican Wave’.

SolidLiquidGas

Conduction

Do all metals conduct heat equally? What factors might effect the conduction of heat through metals?

1111 Thick or Thin? Copper or Iron?

How are we going to make this investigation fair? Even spaces between rivets (3cm) Same number of rivets (5) Precise timing

In your jotter… Conductors Metals are good conductors of heat, but Copper is the best conductor. Thin pieces of metal also conduct heat faster than Thicker ones.

Predict. Observe. Explain. Predict: Which metal will the rivets drop off first? Observe: Complete the practical and record the results Explain: Why did the rivets fall off first? (use the word conduct/or) Which metal would be best for making a frying pan? brass copper iron aluminium

Melting Tiles Which melts first? Why? (try to use the word conduct in your answer)

Which feels colder? Why does it? Cover one side of a penny and button in thermochromic paper.

Investigation 1 Penny Button Increasing temperature
