Disaster Preparedness In the home, school, and community

Hurricanes Hurricanes are a type of severe tropical storm. They form in the southern Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and the eastern Pacific Ocean. Hurricanes can produce winds over 155 miles per hour.

Make A Plan For the home, there should always be a plan in case something happens, like a hurricane. You should build an emergency kit and always have fresh supplied in it. Know your surroundings, find out if any levees or dams in your area could possibly be of danger to you in case of a hurricane. Cover all home windows. Either having storm shutters installed or board up the windows.

Make A Plan For schools, the plans are usually a little different. Since there are many levels in developing hurricanes, there are many different responses. There should be different groups of the staff assigned to different jobs during an emergency.

The teachers should have a small kit for every member of their classroom in case they are shut in by the hurricane. When the warning is issued, all flags, banners, trash cans, and anything else that isn’t attached should be taken down. All gas and electrical appliances should be shut off unless required. Make sure there is plenty of clean water to drink.

Make A Plan Community preparedness is very important. Every community should have a plan in case a hurricane forms. There should be predetermined shelters in the case of a city wide power outage or damage to a large number of homes. The community should have a supply of clean water, food, and generators to sustain the people in the shelters.

And the community should try to get more and more people preparing in their own homes.
