1. ‘Teaching requires skills and labour to foster students’ learning, but it is also an act of artistry that cannot be reduced to technique alone’ (Fraser & McGee, 2012, pg. 55)

2. There are many different roles that a teacher must fulfil including: -Mentor: To inspire and motivate the students -Disciplinarian: To assert and enforce rules and boundaries for the benefit of everyone -Friend/Confidante: To earn the trust of the students so that they feel comfortable and confident in their learning environment -Tutor: Teach the students and monitor their progress. Help them to move forward and improve -Organiser: The teacher should have very efficient organisational skills if they expect their classroom to run smoothly -Communicator: A Teacher needs to be an effective communicator in order to relate information to their students According the New Zealand Teachers Council, a satisfactory teacher should: -Create an environment of respect and understanding -Establish high expectations which value and promote learning -Manage student learning processes -Manage student behaviour positively -Establish a safe physical and emotional environment (The New Zealand Teachers Council 2012)

3. Teaching is a process that is made up of various facets, not just one recipe for transferring information from one person to another. The artistry of teaching is built up by several factors which construct the way in which a teacher relays information to their students. These factors include: -Pedagogical Content Knowledge. This involves the teacher having a thorough and up-to-date knowledge base of the content that they are teaching to their students. -Philosophy. As a teacher, having a philosophy to apply to your profession can assist in giving you guidance and vision to follow as you pursue teaching. -Technique. All teachers will develop their own techniques which they will use as tools to assist them in dealing with various types of learners as well as various situations that they may encounter in their classrooms. -Relationships. The relationships that a teacher builds with their students can determine how they approach the practice of teaching. A teacher that strives to have an authentic, reciprocal and responsive relationship with their students will possess the passion to strive for good results from their students (this isn’t limited to assessments, but can include any measureable progress that the teacher notices in a student.)

4. A good teacher should always be open to learning from their students. They should use feedback to gauge how effective their current strategies are and should be open to changing and adapting these strategies in response to their students. Teachers may use different approaches and learning theories within their classroom to assist them in creating an effective learning environment. This could include Behaviourist, Humanist, Constructivist or Cognitive approaches. It is important that teachers attempt to cater for all different types of learners and that they teach what they think is important. The artistry of teaching should be a combination of the teacher’s pedagogical content knowledge, teaching techniques and skills and attributes that they as an individual can bring to a learning environment.
