Greek Geography Surrounded by three seas; Ionian Sea, the Aegean Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea. It’s no wonder that the ancient Greeks were such great sailors!

Greek Geography Greece could never unite under one single government because the land was divided by large mountains. Because of this, the development of city-states (polis) in regions such as the Balkan Peninsula and the Peloponnesus Peninsula arose.

How Geography affects Greek development The land was not arable, farmable, which made it difficult for the Greeks to farm. They did not have enough food to support the growing population. They turned to trading and colonization to overcome the lack of food. Because of this, Greek culture was spread throughout the Mediterranean Region and they began to use money to trade.

In early times there was no money. People exchanged goods or services-barter system. Coins were invented when trade developed on the water ways. It spread to each city-state and all of the Greek colonies. Each place made their own coins based on weights and measures How Geography affects Greek development

Barter system GONE- Hello $$$$ People from another city-state who wanted to trade would go to a money changer. The money changer would use the system of weights and measures to exchange the coins.

QUESTION? How did the geography affect the expansion of the Greek civilization? A: They had to support a large population but the land was not arable so they used the water ways that surrounded them to trade with others and colonize land that was good for farming.

How Geography affects Greek development City-States were built to support a trade economy and to encourage active citizenship.
