4 Violence Many African Americans fought back against segregation  Many were lynched for trying to fight back Ida B Wells- African American journalist in Memphis, Tennessee, led the fight against lynching's after 3 of her friends were lynched in 1892. She used her job as a journalist to write articles to organize people against lynching.  When groups of white people attempted to lynch her she moved to Chicago Some African Americans who moved north to escape hatred in south still encountered hatred.

5 Plessy v. Ferguson 1892 Homer Plessy (African American) sued a railroad company claiming they violated his 14 th Amendment right to “equal protection of the laws” Supreme court ruled that “separate but equal” facilities did not violate the 14 th Amendment This allowed southern states to segregate schools, universities, hospitals, any public facility, as long as there was a black and a white option. Separate was not equal- black facilities were usually decaying and falling apart. https://video.search.yahoo.com/video/play;_ylt=A2KIo9XdOZVWtyoATygsnIlQ;_ylu=X3oDMTByZWc0dGJtBHNlYwNzcgRzbGsDdmlkBHZ0aWQDBGdwb3MDMQ-- ?p=plessy+v+ferguson&vid=76eef34f11768b277624eb53f830f7f4&turl=http%3A%2F%2Ftse3.mm.bing.net%2Fth%3Fid%3DOVP.V9fd8c508d6713154b803d0cdef4f1764%26pid%3D15.1%26h%3D225%26w%3D300%26c%3 D7%26rs%3D1&rurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DuaSOHKBtuaU&tit=Plessy+v+Ferguson&c=0&h=225&w=300&l=147&sigr=11bc23m8t&sigt=10hrk0o0u&sigi=131s5b2lh&age=1332604800&fr2 =p%3As%2Cv%3Av&fr=yhs-mozilla-002&hsimp=yhs-002&hspart=mozilla&tt=b

8 African American Fight 1909 Du Bois, Jane Addams, and other African American reformers founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Played a major role in helping fight for the end of segregation.
