3 Mobility and Transport Vice- President of the Commission is Mr. Siim Kallas, who is from Estonia. Transport policy directly affects everyone in Europe. Whatever age we are and whatever activities we undertake, transport and mobility play a fundamental role in todays world.

6 EU Driving licence An estimated 300 million people in the EU hold a driving licence. The EU is striving to hormonise the requirements for obtaining a licence as well as the design. For Example: Everyone have the same licence

7 Passangers rights should be protected in the following ways: Specific measures in favours of persons with reduced mobility; Compensation and assistance in the event of a delay, cancellation or denied boarding; Liability in the event of death or injury; Theatment of complaints and means of redress; Passenger information

8 The community policy objectives for road transport are therefore: to promote efficient road freight passengers transport services to create fair conditions for competition to promote harmonise safer

9 more environmental friendly technical standards ensure a minimum fiscal social hormonisation and to make sure that, the rules in road transport are effectively applied without discrimination

10 For example: lorry drivers have to rest after 8 hours lorry drivers have a place where they can wash themselves the company have to pay their food

11 The Schengen Visa has made traveling between its 15 European member countries much easier and less bureaucratic. Traveling on a Schengen Visa means that the visa holder can travel to any (or all) member countries using one single visa, thus avoiding the hassle and expense of obtaining individual visas for each country. This is particularly beneficial for persons who wish to visit several European countries on the same trip. The Schengen visa is a “visitor visa”. It is issued to citizens of countries who are required to obtain a visa before entering Europe. The Schengen Visa

13 The Commission issued a ten-year action plan for the transport sector in 2001. A mid term review in 2006 said the plan should now concentrate on making railways more competitive, introducing a ports policy, developing transport systems making use of the latest technology, charing for infrastructure use, producing more biofuels and finding ways to make towns and cities less congested.
