5th Grade Review Chapter 7 Exam: April 12, 2016

Vocabulary: fill the blanks with the words from the word box. WeatherWeather Map Air PressureThunderstorm HumidityBlizzard BarometerTornado Air MassHurricanes Weather MapStorm Surge Insolation Cyclone Front Climate Current

1.The condition of the troposphere at a particular place and time is called _____________ 2.Waves caused by hurricanes are known as ________________ 3.Snowstorm with winds and enough snowfall that you can only see up to one quarter of a mile is called _______________ 4.A _________________ is a device used to measure atmospheric pressure. 5.A map that shows the weather in a specific area at a specific time is called ______________ 6.The meeting place of an air mass with a different type of air mass is called a ______ 7.________________ is the force put on a given area by the weight of the air above it. 8.The solar energy that reaches the planet is called _______________ 9.A ___________________ shows the weather in a specific area at a specific time. climate Storm Surge Blizzard Barometer weather map front Air pressure insolation weather map

10.Any storm with a low pressure center that causes a circular pattern of winds is a ___________________ 11.The average weather of a place is called ______________ 12.A ___________________ is the constant movement of ocean water. 13.___________________ is the amount of water vapor in the air. 14.A tropical storm turns into a hurricane when the wind speed of the storm reaches more than 74 mph. 15.A ___________________ is a rotating, funnel-shaped cloud with high wind speeds. 16.Rainstorm that includes lightning and thunder is called a _________________ 17.An _________________ is a large region of the atmosphere in which the air has similar properties. cyclone climate current humidity tornado thunderstorm air mass

Insolation in Earth’s Atmosphere : do a drawing that explains how the Suns rays are absorbed or reflected when they reach Earth.

Layers of the atmosphere: Write the names in the correct order. troposphere stratosphere mesosphere thermosphere

Movement of Molecules in Air As the flame heats up the air, the molecules move faster, they spread out making the hotter air less dense (lighter) than the cooler dense air (heavier). There are fewer molecules in the hotter air than in the cool air.

Sea Breeze: explain how this happens. What warms faster the ocean or land? What cools faster?

Explanation: Land warms faster than the ocean. During the day lands air warms, because its lighter it goes up. In the atmosphere it cools and becomes heavy so it comes back down. You can feel the breeze coming from the ocean towards land. At night, land cools faster than the ocean. So the movement of air is inverted. You’ll feel the breeze coming from land to the ocean.

Clouds: draw lines from the names to the descriptions of each cloud. Cirrus Clouds Cumulus Clouds Stratus Clouds They form at the highest altitudes They form at middle altitudes They form at low altitudes Can cause heavy rain If they are white it means good weather They bring changes in the weather

Hail Formation: how does hail grows in size? Rain drops in the cloud move up and down because of wind currents and as they do they get new layers of water that freezes and turns into bigger hail.

Air Masses and Fronts: look at the pictures, explain in your own words the movement of air Is this a cold front or a warm front? What is happening to the warm air? What are the weather conditions this front causes? Warm Front The warm air is moving up because its lighter. It moves slowly to the atmosphere. This causes nice weather conditions. Sunny days.

Is this a cold front or a warm front? What is happening to the warm air? What are the weather conditions this front causes? Cols Front A cold air mass moves towards a warm air mass. The warm air is forced up fast so it causes strong heavy rain, thunder and bad weather conditions.

Thunderstorms: how does lightning forms? Warm Air Precipitation During a storm, Warm air (with a – charge) goes up. It meets and collides with water drops that are carrying a + charge towards land. They store energy until the energy is released and the lightning happens.

Hurricanes vs. Tornadoes give similarities and differences HurricanesTornadoes It can last hoursIt lasts 2 – 3 minutes It’s bigger, damage is greaterIt only affects a small area It brings heavy precipitation for days Precipitation lasts very short time

What are Green House gases? What do they cause? They are gases that are relased in the atmosphere that affect our climate because they prevent the heat from the Sun to return to space. This heat stays on Earth and can help the melting of the poles, among other harmful consequences to the environment.
