2 Aims and Objectives: Aim: To identify the range of options available following this course, as well as define some longer term career options for further investigation Objectives: By the end of the session learners will: Be able to identify the three main options available to them after completion of this course Know where to go to explore career options Have an understanding of how to assess suitability to career options

3 Raising the Participation Age (RPA) New legislation ‘Raising the Participation Age’ (RPA) requires everyone to participate in some sort of education or training until their 18 th Birthday. This could be: Full time education An apprenticeship Work, Volunteering, Self Employment plus Part Time Course

8 Assessing your suitability / testing viability Check you match the skills, strengths and outlook required for the role Volunteer to check if you like this sort of work / environment Check the qualifications you need – are you comfortable with taking a degree for example? Do a UK or regionalised job search to see if there are jobs in the field once qualified

9 Pathways open to you: Full Time Education A: Continue onto a Level 3 B: Leave at the end of this year and join another full time course either here or another school (sixth form) or college, as long as you enrol before you are 19, your course will be fully funded.

10 Benefits to Full Time Education Benefits to staying on in Full Time Education: UCAS Points (if you study at Level 3) Feel more confident about your skills and knowledge Strange but True: Staying in education allows you to delay big career decisions for longer Increase chances of promotion in the future

11 Option 2: Apprenticeships are offered at Level 2, Level 3 and Level 4 and Degree Level (in some subjects) Study towards a related qualification (One day a week college /on job assessed) Study towards a related qualification (One day a week college /on job assessed) Apprenticeships take 1 to 4 years to complete depending on their level. Minimum Wage for an Apprentice is £3.30

12 Option 2: Benefits to Benefits to Apprenticeships: Allows you to earn and learn Gives you industry credibility with a good employer reference for the future Builds your confidence in the workplace Helps you apply your learning in a more practical way

13 Option 3: Work, Volunteering, Self Employment PLUS Part-time Education If you know an employer who would like to take you on in a paid role, you can say YES, as long as you do a part-time course alongside You may already be doing voluntary work or commercial experience (unpaid) You can continue to do this as long as you enrol on a part time course You can run your own business as long as you undertake part time study alongside Part Time study can be ‘distance learning’ – a course you pay for by module and study at home (no funding from the government for this) or part time day/evening classes at a college or training provider.

15 FAQ What are the consequences of not carrying on my learning until my 18 th Birthday? You will be classified as NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) Once NEET, you may be forced to take part in Job Centre and DWP programs including enforced voluntary work and training not always in a subject area of interest Legal consequences for parents (in some cases)
