1 Teacher Guide This lesson is designed to teach kids to ask a critical thinking question that you can’t just put into a search box to solve. To do that, we encourage them with smaller questions that search can help them answer. Make sure that you read the notes for each slide: they not only give you teaching tips but also provide answers and hints so you can help the kids if they are having trouble. Remember, you can always send feedback to the Bing in the Classroom team at BingInTheClassroom@Microsoft.com. You can learn more about the program at bing.com/classroom and follow the daily lessons on our Partners In Learning site. BingInTheClassroom@Microsoft.combing.com/classroomPartners In Learning site Want to extend today’s lesson? Consider using Skype in the Classroom to arrange for your class to chat with another class in today’s location. And if you are using Windows 8, you can also use the Bing apps to learn more about this location and topic; the Travel and News apps in particular make great teaching tools.Skype in the Classroom Nell Bang-Jensen is a teacher and theater artist living in Philadelphia, PA. Her passion for arts education has led her to a variety of roles including developing curriculum for Philadelphia Young Playwrights and teaching at numerous theaters and schools around the city. She works with playwrights from ages four to ninety on developing new work and is especially interested in alternative literacies and theater for social change. A graduate of Swarthmore College, she currently works in the Artistic Department of the Wilma Theater and, in addition to teaching, is a freelance actor and dramaturg. In 2011, Nell was named a Thomas J. Watson Fellow and spent her fellowship year traveling to seven countries studying how people get their names. This lesson is designed to teach the Common Core State Standard: Operations & Algebraic Thinking CCSS.Math.Content.4.OA.A.3CCSS.Math.Content.4.OA.A.3 Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding. CCSS.Math.Content.4.OA.A.2CCSS.Math.Content.4.OA.A.2 Multiply or divide to solve word problems involving multiplicative comparison, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem, distinguishing multiplicative comparison from additive comparison. 1 CCSS.Math.Content.3.OA.B.6CCSS.Math.Content.3.OA.B.6 Understand division as an unknown-factor problem. For example, find 32 ÷ 8 by finding the number that makes 32 when multiplied by 8.

3 Southwest of India and Sri Lanka, the Republic of the Maldives has become a holiday hotspot during the past 40 years. Fewer than 200 of the 1,192 islands within the 26 atolls are occupied, and most of those cater to the tourism industry, though fishing is still a major economic force. The average elevation of these islands is less than 5 feet above sea level, making the Maldives the world’s lowest country. That low elevation also makes the Maldives the nation at the most immediate risk of annihilation due to rising sea levels caused by climate change. In fact, scientists suggest that some islands in the chain may be underwater at some point in the near future. Very conscious of these threats, the Maldivian government has put into place some of the world’s most aggressive plans to reduce greenhouse emissions, which are thought to contribute to climate change. If all goes as planned, the nation will eliminate or offset all greenhouse gasses it produces by 2020. If sea levels continue to rise the way they have been, in how many years will the Maldives be underwater?

4 1 Web SearchOn average, how much have sea levels been rising per year? 2 Web Search What is causing sea levels to rise? Do you predict they will continue to rise this much per year? Why or why not? 3 Web Search The Maldivian government plans to eliminate or offset all greenhouse gases it produces by 2020. What does reducing greenhouse emissions have to do with sea levels rising? 4 Web Search How many inches are there in a foot? What is the average elevation of the Maldives in inches? 5 Thinking How could you create a formula (in words) to figure out in how many years the Maldives will be underwater? What mathematical operations will be most helpful in solving this? If sea levels continue to rise the way they have been, in how many years will the Maldives be underwater?
