ORKA support - status report Scope of conceptual design task Develop a conceptual design for how to support the ORKA detector inside the CDF detector Develop a conceptual design for how to install the ORKA detector into the CDF detector while inside the collision hall Complete by the end of August ORKA support concept status - 27June2012 July 27, 2012 PPD Mechanical Department Joe Howell John Rauch Bob Wands

ORKA support Some Requirements/Assumptions Weight of ORKA ~ 100 tons Calorimeter dimensions: radius < 1.35 m, length 2.5 m Must be installed in the CDF detector while the detector is in the collision hall The CDF detector can be modified while in the assembly hall but it will later be captured in the collision hall by IARC construction ORKA should not be supported from the aluminum shell of the solenoid ORKA will have a self container support structure that can span between rails on the sides Support structures can be from 300 series stainless steel ( m ~ 1.05) ORKA support concept status - 27June2012

Support Rail Features The attachment points for the rail would accessed by temporarily removing the End Wall Hadron wedges near 3 and 9 o’clock The ends of the rails are stepped to fit in the gaps of the end plugs 3” (75 mm) thick curved middle section x 27” (.7 m) tall; 304 stainless steel Checking the concept – optimize for manufacturability later 1.352 m radius The rails must span the load between ends without contacting the solenoid shell To keep the rails “thin” there can not be a large component of the load in the weak direction of the rail

ORKA support concept status - 27June2012 25 tons Constrained at the bolt holes FEA Model of Support Rail Concept

ORKA support concept status - 27June2012 Plot of Stress Contours in Rail Model 15 ksi at mid-span which is below the allowable stress of 19.8 ksi for alloy 304 Stainless Steel Buckling analysis indicates the rail is stable for these load conditions

ORKA support concept status - 27June2012 Vertical deflection at mid- span ~ 0.1’’ (2.5 mm) Plot of Vertical Deflection Contours in Rail Model

ORKA support concept status - 27June2012 Motion Study to Check Path into Collision Hall Temporary Extension rails Connect to fixed rails Confirming that it will fit. The best orientation during transportation will depend on the design of the transportation cart and the rigging method.

ORKA support concept status - 27June2012 Tons Options for Moving ORKA into Collision Hall for Insertion into CDF ORKA and its support structure could be held in a special cart that includes extension rails. A rigging contract could be arranged to move the cart from the assembly hall into position to insert ORKA Hilman Traksporter For moving heavy awkward objects in tight areas where it is difficult or impossible to use a forklift or other means

Next Steps Collect Feedback (Are we on the right track ?) Investigate the connection of the ends of the rails in more detail Investigate the manufacturability of the rails and estimate cost Investigate the options for sliding ORKA along the rails and estimate cost Develop a concept of an insertion cart and estimate cost Investigate rigging contract options and cost Prepare a report ORKA support concept status - 27June2012
