6 Activity 2: Guessing meanings from contexts  Before the era of modern transportation, people traveled in caravans of camels or horses.  Bali is a famous tourist destination in Indonesia  The number of people of who cannot read and write has declined sharply in Indonesia.  Market is the place where merchants sell goods to customers.  Smoking is hazardous to your health.  The harsh climate in North and South Poles makes living in these places almost impossible.  In Tanah Abang Market, textiles and accessories are traded in special prices.  The threat of heart attacks comes from heavy smoking and unhealthy diets.

11 Activity 3: Mind Mapping Group work  The class is divided into 5 groups.  Each group gets one part of the reading passage.  Each group reads the assigned part of the passage and creates a mind map of sub section to help remember the key points.

12 Activity 4: Sharing Directions:  The class is regrouped.  Each group should get a member of each of the previous groups.  Each member of the previous groups shares his/her part using the mind map to make the new group well- informed about the whole passage.

13 Main Ideas  The main idea of a paragraph is the idea that summarizes what is mainly discussed.  Skimming is the ability to read a text quickly to find the gist or the main idea discussed.  Sometimes, when we read, we just want to know what the passage is about or what a paragraph is about. To do this, we just read it quickly to find the main idea discussed.  The following activity may help you develop your ability to skim for main ideas.
