Light

Light is a form of energy. Lots of floating energy made up of electricity and magnetism. This energy makes up the Electromagnetic Spectrum.

Electromagnetic Spectrum

Parts of a Light Wave Crest – top part of the wave Trough – Bottom part of the Wave Wavelength – one full wave length would be either crest to crest or trough to trough. (remember the picture from your notes)

White Light (A.K.A. Visible Light) White light is the light we see. White light is a combination of several different colors traveling together. They are the colors of the rainbow and we can use the following to remember the colors. ROY G. BIV (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet).

Light Waves Light waves are characterized by their wave lengths. In the visible spectrum Red has the longest wavelength. Violet has the Shortest Wavelength. (Remember the diagrams we drew in our science Notebook).

Behaviors of Light When Light hit an object one of the following will happen: Reflection, refraction, absorption, or Transmission. 1.Reflect (reflection) – Light bounces off and back (remember diagram we drew in our notes). Bounces directly back when surface is smooth and shiny. Mirror reflect the most. On rough surfaces will bounce off and back scattering.

Behaviors of Light Refraction – Light bend or breaks apart. Prism will break light into the colors of the rainbow. Also remember the pencil in a glass of water.

Rainbows Rainbows in the sky are produced because each raindrop acts like a tiny prism and REFRACT white light. When sunlight shines through the rain the raindrops act like tiny prisms and REFRACT the white light (breaks it apart) so that we see the colors of a rainbow. ROY G. BIV colors are reflected into our eyes.

Transmit Light - rays go through. Think of a clear surface like a window. Light rays go through the window.

Absorb Light rays stop and are taken in as heat energy. Dark colors absorb more heat energy. Light colors absorb less. That’s why it is better to wear light color cloths in the summer. Dark colors, dark brown & black will absorb more heat energy. Also think of the black tar on a road and how hot it gets in the summer. (Think about the picture we drew in class).

How We See Color All Colors of visible light hit an object. The colors we see reflect to our eyes. All other colors of visible light is absorbed into the object. An Example: Sunlight comes down as white light. Hits an apple. We see red, all the other colors absorbed into the apple.
