1 AP: Know it, live it, love it. Learning targets: I understand why the AP Stylebook is used I know how the book is organized I know how to find information in the book I can familiarize myself with the basic rules for common usage.

2 Why must we use the AP Stylebook? Why not MLA? According to author and journalist Tony Rogers, “AP style is simply a standardized way of writing everything from dates to street addresses to job titles. AP style was developed and is maintained by The Associated Press, the world’s oldest news service.” Learning AP style is certainly not fun or glamorous, but getting a handle on it is absolutely necessary. Why? Because AP style is the gold standard for print. Get on boardGet on board! (You should only use MLA for ELA purposes). 3  Without getting creepy like this couple, take five minutes to look through your AP Stylebook with your partner. Start with the Stylebook Key at the front of the book so you can understand what you are looking at. Then look through the Quick Reference Guide to see how things are organized. Now skim through the book.

5 Know the basics so you don’t always have to look it up, but don’t bother trying to memorize it all. It’s more important to know how to look something up. WHEN IN DOUBT, LOOK IT UP! DON’T LET YOUR EDITORS CATCH MISTAKES FOR YOU! Have a book by you for easy reference when you are writing or get the AP Stylebook app on your tablet or smartphone.

We are looking for the speediest of the group! *EVERYONE also needs a clean sheet of paper so you can list these sections and page numbers for easy reference later.
