1 A way to write paragraphs
T-BEAR A way to write paragraphs

2 T-BEAR T-BEAR is a way of writing paragraphs that’s similar to RACE responses. From now on, we’re going to do T-BEAR instead of RACE responses.

3 T-BEAR Single Paragraph
The acronym, T-BEAR, can help you remember to include all the necessary information to create a well-developed body paragraph. This paragraph can stand alone as a complete development of ideas or it may be one of several body paragraphs in a complete essay. Each letter in the T-BEAR acronym is explained below:

4 T T- Topic Sentence (take a clear stance in your thesis, specifically answer the prompt) Example: In “All Summer in a Day,” all of the students, not just William, are bullies.

5 B B- Brief Explanation/Bridge to Examples
This gives the reader some context for your evidence, and clarifies what you mean in your topic sentence. What is it the reader has to know before you give your evidence? Example: The middle of the story gives a clear example of how all of the students play a role in Margot being bullied.

6 E E- Examples\Evidence (accounts of actual incidents, specific details, direct quotes, and/or evidence from research) “For example, on pg. 5, it says, “They surged about her, caught her up and bore her, protesting, and then pleading, and then crying, back into a tunnel, a room, a closet, where they slammed and locked the door. They stood looking at the door and saw it tremble from her beating and throwing herself against it. They heard her muffled cries. Then, smiling, the turned and went out and back down the tunnel, just as the teacher arrived.”

7 A A- Analysis  Why is the evidence important? What is your opinion on the situation? Describe to the reader how your evidence proves your point. “These quotes show how all of the children, not just William, pushed Margot into the closet, and none of the children bothered to tell the teacher that Margot was in there. Also, the students “smiled” afterward, showing they were happy that Margot was trapped.”

8 R R- Recall/Reflect/Relate
Restate the topic sentence in a different way. What was the main idea you just proved? “Although some readers may say that William is the main bully in the story, all of the students happily forced Margot into the closet and did not tell the teacher, making them bullies as well.”

9 Now: Get a partner, or you may work by yourself.
I will give you a sample T-BEAR paragraph. Label each part of the paragraph according to T-BEAR. So, write a “T” above the Topic Sentence, a “B” above the Bridge Sentence, etc. Use the notes I gave you to help you!!!

10 Now: You will write a T-BEAR paragraph on the following topic: Should Tony be arrested for murdering Durante? Explain why or why not. Use at least ONE example (a quote) from the story to support your answer. Before you write, you must plan out your response in a graphic organizer. Then, when you’re done with the graphic organizer, you can start writing on a piece of lined paper.
