RoboForce! 4 th Grade Science & Math

What is a Robot?  A machine that is controlled by a computer and is designed to look like a human or object  Knows surroundings, uses movement and energy  Part of science and technology  Real-world robots:  Medical surgery, taking X-Rays  Space shuttles, robots that go into space and take pictures

What is RoboForce?  A robot that is controlled by a computer and is made to look like an OBJECT.  Programmed to move forward (up, down, or no ramp) and pull objects a certain distance  What is it? Use your imagination!  A truck of some kind that pulls things

Let’s Try It!!!

Terms to Know  Force: a push or PULL on an object. This can make an object speed up, slow down, or remain in place.  Gravitational force: A force caused by the Earth. Gravity pulls objects down toward the Earth. (Jumping- go right back down!)  Speed: measurement of how fast an object moves  Simple Machine: make jobs and movements easier by helping push or PULL over distances  Incline plane: a slanting surface connecting a lower level to a higher level.  Decline plane: a downward slanting surface, opposite of incline plane  Programming: creating a set of instructions to allow the computer to do something (moves RoboForce)  Patterns of Change: a pattern of the data collected

Scientific Inquiry  Step 1: Ask a Question.  Step 2: Make a Prediction. (Hypothesis)  Step 3: Make a Plan. (Step-by-step Instructions)  Step 4: Experiment and Observe Fill out data table.  Step 5: Conclusions Fill out graph. WRITE!

Any Questions?

Instructions 1. Get into your GROUPS and fill out the parts of the worksheet INDIVIDUALLY before you can test RoboForce. 2. Discuss with your group members using scientific language about what you think will happen. 3. When your group is called to the front, test RoboForce! 4. Fill out your data table during the trials INDIVIDUALLY. Make observations. 5. Discuss your observations with your GROUP. Fill out the rest of your worksheet and draw conclusions INDIVIDUALLY. 6. Research and write about robots!

What will you learn?  Scientific inquiry and being a scientist!  Working together using scientific language.  Measure the distance an object and compare measurements such as inches to feet.  The effects of gravity on force.  Visually see the use of simple machines.  Write and discuss observations, make graphs and tables.  Use clear and informative language to describe an activity and draw conclusions.  Use TECHNOLOGY to conduct greater research on the topic

Research Review WRITING PROMPT: Spend some time researching robots and choose ONE thing you would want a robot to do. List pros and cons about it. Take notes and cite your ONE source. Write about it and support your point. At the end of your paper, add a paragraph connecting your research to this RoboForce activity.  First, research and take notes. Use this information to INFORM others.  Pretend you’re going to teach someone else about robots!  Use your own words. DON’T PLAGIARIZE, but cite ONE source.  Write a Draft.  1 introduction paragraph, 3 body paragraphs, 1 conclusion paragraph  Edit and have 1 friend edit too. Fix changes. Publish your great work

Any Questions?

TEAMS  Draw a colored slip from the bucket.  Group 1: YELLOW  Group 2: BLUE  Group 3: RED  Group 4: PURPLE READY, SET, Get into groups!
