University of East London Elizabeth Attree General background In the 1890s, the French psychologist Alfred Binet was employed by the French Government to devise tests that would identify school children with special needs. The tests that he devised were the forerunners of psychometric assessments deemed to measure intellectual functioning in the form of an intelligence quotient (IQ). Research Methods 1

11. University of East London Elizabeth Attree For example, the Wechsler Intelligence Scales measure ‘intellectual functioning’ through a combination of two scales: a performance scale and a verbal scale = a Full Scale IQ. Research Methods 1

University of East London Elizabeth Attree The performance scale measures non-verbal problem solving, the ability to think quickly in visual images and the ability to quickly interpret visual materials. The verbal scale involves using verbal problem solving, using verbal comprehension and skills to solve problems. Research Methods 1

(The standard deviation is a measure of the variability of the distribution of scores.)
