1 Do Now  Record the following prompt on you Do Now sheet.  With a partner discuss:  What someone might say to refute or disprove your argument.  Record one thing you and your partner discussed

2 Counterclaim 8 th Grade Language Arts

3 The Argumentative Essay  Uses evidence to both show one’s own position and to refute the opposing argument.

4 Argument Paper Map Introduction Supporting reason 1: Including evidence Supporting reason 2: Including evidence Supporting reason 3: Including evidence Counterclaim: Including evidence to refute opposing claim Conclusion

5 Use one paragraph for your counterclaim. Also, be sure to respond to the opposing claim (rebuttal).

6 Counterclaim  A claim made to offset or disprove another claim

7 Refute your counterclaim!  Claim: Schools should continue selling chocolate milk.  Counterclaim: Chocolate milk has a lot of added sugar.  Refute the Counterclaim: Although chocolate milk has more sugar than plain low-fat milk, students are still getting a serving of Calcium, and Vitamins A and D, which are valuable to their heath.

8 Refute your counterclaim!  Claim: Physical education should be required by students everyday in school.  Counterclaim: Requiring physical education every day will make it more difficult for students to take other elective classes.  Refute the counterclaim: Although requiring students to take physical education everyday may not allow students to take all the electives they want, students will be dramatically healthier.

9 Together…  Complete the Counterclaim worksheet by writing possible counterclaims for each topic.

10 On your own…  Continue working on your paper.
