4 Origins ▪ Explorers look west in order to reach India and establish a shorter route for trade. ▪ Columbus stumbles upon the Florida Keys. His return to Europe sparks interest in moving westward. ▪ The Columbian Exchange begins, uniting Europe, Africa, and the New World ▪ It is not until the 17 th century that Europe begins settling the area that later becomes the United States. (Example: Jamestown.) ▪Roanoke amongst the first a little bit earlier, but a failed attempt. ▪ Several Nations settle on the Eastern Seaboard; England, France, Spain, the Holy Roman Empire (fragmented German states), The Dutch, and the Swedes.

5 Columbian Exchange ▪ Columbus tells of his travels west. ▪ The Europeans do not lose the wealth based mindset. ▪ An elaborate trade system develops as a result. ▪ Direct effects of the Columbian Exchange last until the close to the 20 th century. ▪ Some last on through today, politically and economically

7 Establishing Outposts Motivated by wealth, and power, Europe began to settle the “New World” A few unsuccessful tries, most noticeably, Roanoke Amongst the first successful Jamestown 1607 Plymouth Rock 1620 Some outposts were directly controlled by European Government, others by private investors; the Dutch for example Those run by the government were Crown settlements, and those by the private Charter

8 Establishing Power The Europeans divided the “New World” by who was already there. The English settled in New England, and parts of the Southern seaboard. The Spaniards focused predominantly on South and Central America, but also claimed what is now Florida. The French Settled in Northern Maine, and large swathes of land in Canada along the St. Lawrence. The Dutch, and Swedes settled in the “Middle Colonies” along side them was “Germany”

9 Establishing Power Sadly, this meant that many European powers were brutal to Indigenous peoples. Small conflicts broke out amongst the outposts. Roanoke has often been speculate
