October 12, 2012 In-Service  Please sign in at the Library desk and pick up today’s agenda, clock hour forms, etc.  From the front table area, please pick up: 1) Your folder 2) A notebook 3) coffee, if you want  A topic for table discussion as you enjoy coffee and good company: what are some of your successes in the classroom so far this year? (Also, be sure to ask Kevin Olson about his daily yogurt ritual)

3. Professional Development Interactive Notebook Purposes:  to model and practice using this teaching/learning/organizational tool  to provide a place for PD work and reflection  to provide continuity for our PD time  to create exemplars to use in the classroom

4. Step One: Design a Cover page Please include your name and then design your page as appropriate for you and as a way to remind you of how you are a part of something bigger here at Decatur. Ideas: favorite quotes (some are provided at your table), Decatur’s mission, symbols that motivate your work, the reasons you stay in this tough profession…whatever is meaningful for you. FYI: Background music – pieces that Steve Gorringe’s students are working on in his classes.

5. Step Two: make a table of contents page Label it Table of Contents Add columns for description and for page numbers (see example)

6. Step Three: Number the pages Skip a page (to provide extra space for table of contents) and then begin numbering pages. Odd numbers on the left, even numbers on the right.

7. Step Four: Begin your first set of notes On page 2 (right side of notebook), make a page for Cornell Notes. In the left column of your Cornell Notes, write the three questions (see example). As you watch the video (14 minutes), fill in the notes section. 8. So What? At the bottom of your Cornell Notes, summarize the video and data overview. Your summary will cover the ways Common Core will help prepare students for success in high school and beyond as well as hopes and fears about the transition.

9. The left side… On the left side, take five minutes and write a reflection: 1) How will the new standards support what I teach? 2) How will the new standards change the way I teach? 3) Share responses with your table.
