3 For more than 40 years, the Cold War influenced the world. Education, medicine, sporting events, even movies and books were driven by the conflict. 1980s: things began to change

6 Under Gorbachev, people in the Soviet Union were allowed more freedom. Perestroika (reform of the Soviet economy) Factory managers operated with more freedom Private enterprise Elections for assembly

7 Gorbachev and Reagan met to discuss Soviet- U.S. relations. New treaties were signed limiting nuclear missiles

8 Eastern Europe faced many of the problems the Soviet Union did: Inefficient factories – little consumer goods Polluted lands Unpopular governments
