2 Announcements Today- CASAS #1 Are you looking for a place to practice speaking English with other students? On Friday, March 18 th, we will have the first English Lounge from 11:45- 12:45 in the ESL library. Also, on Friday the 18 th, we will have our first Movie Night in the library from 6-10. We will be watching “Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story.”

6 Warm up: used to I would like for you to write a sentence about yourself, but you have to use used to in your story. Ex. I used to run 4 miles every day. I will collect your sentences and give you someone else’s sentence.You need to find the person who wrote the sentence, but do not ask him or her: Did you use to run 4 miles a day? Instead, you must ask questions like: Did you like to exercise? Did you have a daily routine?

7 Example secret My sister and I used to steal packets of sugar from the store after school. What kinds of questions can you ask? Do you have a sister? Were you a good child? Did you use to do anything fun after school?

8 Speaking practice What kind of student did you use to be? Who used to be your best friend? Where did you use to go on weekends? What sports did you use to practice? What were your favorite games?

13 Subject In English, we use subjects to show who/ what is doing something or an action. Subjects normally come before verbs. Who ate my ice-cream? -Tina ate your ice-cream. What happened? -A storm happened today (something happened).

14 Object Sometimes, there are objects in sentences. Objects are usually nouns that have something happening to them. Ex. I love my sister. Martha saw him.What is the subject? What is my verb?What is the verb?What is the object? Ex. Who do you love? What is the subject? Who loves? What is the verb? What is the object?Who gets/ receives my love?

16 Note 2 What is the difference between who and whom? Who is used to talk about a subject. Whom is used to talk about an object. 1. Whom did you meet? 2. Whom is at the door? X 3. Whom gave it to you? X Here, what is the subject? What is the object? 4. Whom did you interview? * Be careful. Whom can be used instead of who in questions about the object that do not use be.

17 Note 3 To ask more detailed information about people and things, use: Which+ noun (to ask about a choice). wh N V Which witness told the truth? Whose + noun ( to ask about a possession) wh N Aux S V Whose lawyer do you believe? *Note, in this case, do is not a verb, it is an auxiliary verb, so whose lawyer is the object. How many + noun (to ask about quantities) Wh N V How many people saw the trial?

19 Note 3 For questions about the subject, use this word order: Wh- word + noun+ verb Which defendant answered best? For questions about the object, use this order. Wh- word + noun + aux + subject + verb Which defendant did you trust more?

22 Note 5 When the main verb is a form of BE (am, is, are, was, were) use: Wh- word + be +s When is she getting here? Who is the first witness? Where are the witnesses? Or Wh- word + noun + be How many witnesses are there?
