1 Template ID: sapphire Size: 36x54 Best Buy’s Biggest Loser Matthew Barnett Rowan University Department of Health and Exercise Science IntroductionDescription Results Discussion/Conclusion Obesity is a growing problem globally, nationally, locally, and in our workplace. Being overweight or obese can cause many health problems including life-threatening diseases and illnesses. These risk factors include; type two diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, fatty liver disease, osteoarthritis, stroke, and certain types of cancer(breast, colon, endometrial, and kidney)(niddk). Obesity also has a major impact in the workforce. Full-time workers who are obese miss 450million additional days of work each year. This results in a loss of 153billion dollars in productivity annually. Medical expenses for obese people are 42% higher than those who are of normal weight (obesitycampaign). The purpose of this program is to promote A healthy life-style for the associate at Best Buy store 583. Educating the employees on healthy eating habits and exercise programs will result in healthier staff and more enjoyable work environment. Goals/Objectives Methods of Evaluation References Goal 1: Lower the Obesity Rate of the Associates that work at Best Buy store 583. Process Objectives: Conduct meetings half way through program to make sure everyone stays on track, and to make sure all of the participants attend. Impact Objective: By end of Program at least 66% of participants will have lost weight. Outcome Objective: Follow up with Participants three weeks after the program to make sure they are maintaining a healthy life-style. Goal 2: Educate Best Buy employees on how to live a healthy life-style Process Objective: Nutritional and exercise advice will be posted weekly on the bulletin board in the break room, and making myself available for personal questions and advice. Impact Objective: By the end of the program, all the participants will know how to safely exercise, and improve their daily diets. Outcome Objective: Follow up with participants three weeks after program to make sure they are continuing their health habits. Store 583’s “Best Buy’s Biggest Loser” will take place over the course of six weeks and will be a contest to between the employees of the store to see who can lose the biggest percentage of body weight. The contest took place from January 10 th until February 21 st. This will be done by recording the weight of the participant at the beginning of week one and then again at the end of week six. With these values, the percentage of weight lost will be calculated and who ever lost the most weight will be crowned the winner. Although the contest will have an ultimate winner, that is not the objective of the program. This program is put into place to influence a change in unhealthy behaviors and to maintain a healthy lifestyle for the participants after the contest is over. This will be achieved by educating the participants on a weekly basis on specific ways to improve their health. The program will be broken down week-by-week in the following section. Each week the participants will check-in with me and ask any questions they may have in regards to improving their health habits. There will also be weekly updated education in the form of flyers posted on a designated bulletin board in the break room. There will be prizes award are as follows: First place gets a $100 Best Buy gift card and 500 path to excellence points. Second place gets a $50 gift card and 250 path to excellence points. Third place gets a $25 gift card and 200 path to excellence points. Other than the top three, any participant who lost weight will receive 125 path to excellence points. (2012, October). This is the most effective way to measure quantitative prove if the associates have lost weight. The second objective of educating the employees on how to live a healthy life-style will be measured by taking surveys at the end of the program that will collect quantitative data by asking the participants if they have continued their healthy habits. There were nine participants total of which five were male and four were female. The largest amount of weight lost was 25lbs by Will G. whom had also the largest percent of body weight lost which was 7.7%. The lowest worst result yielded was from Tatiana whom gained one pound. Over all there was an average weight loss of six pounds. The program yielded a significant p-value of.046. Total Participants9 Average Weight Lost6lbs P-Value.046 In conclusion of the program, we can say it was an overall success due to yielding a p=value of.046. The participants that continually asked questions and sleeked advice found the best results. The participants that lost less than one percent of their body weight did not seem to take interest as much as the others. The employee that gained a pound did not participate in all the weekly check-ins and only weighed in at the end in chance she could get the path to excellence points for losing any weight at all. He winner of the contest, Will G, lost twenty-five pounds. He was all of the weekly check-ins and sent me the most emails and text messages about seeking advice on his meals and asking for different exercises. I believe this was the key to his success, he had the want to change and it showed in his results. Recommendations There were a few limitations I faced while conducting this contest that if changed in a future program could yield even better results. Time was a limiting factor. The contest was only six weeks. Six weeks is not a long enough period for anyone to truly move into a maintenance stage and unhealthy behaviors are completely changed. If it was possible to do a sixteen week program, there could have been tremendous results that could have caused long- lasting behavior change. Another limitation was the environment at our workplace. It was difficult to demonstrate exercises for the participants at Best Buy since there is not equipment and no much open space. Also the other employees who were not participating in the contest were bringing in fast food into the break room. Everyday you can find Chick-Fil-A or pizza in the store and it lead to some of the participants to give in to temptation. It would be ideal if we had sometime in a fitness facility and/or a separate break room away from temptation.
