10 What is worth knowing about our school…?!

11 Secondary Technical School is the continuation of the historical educational activities which have taken place in the same place and buildings for more than 300 years. Secondary Technical School has a very rich history. In the building of today’s school there used to be the first school which was founded after Opole Silesia liberation – Public Junior High School and High School. The building situated at Gosławicka Street ( Mondrzyka, nowadays Osmańczyka) earlier also used to be an educational institution – German Lower-Secondary School in Opole. That school was created in 1801 after Jesuits’ College which was founded there in 1670 in Opole Piasts’ fortified castle called ‘on the hill’. The castle, built about 1387, was demolished by the Germans in 1843 who built the school building at that place. The Opole region developing economy required the foundation of trade education. On 9 August 1947 Public Industrial School was formed and the first workshop started on 8 January 1948

12 The school has undergone a number of reorganizations changing its name and education profiles. In 1958/59 Technical Mechanical School was founded out of Mechanical Department of Mechanical-Electrical School. On 21 July 1961 it changed the name into Secondary Trade School no 2 in Opole. On 1 September 1975 the name changed again into Secondary Technical School and has been used since then. Until 1990 more than 14 000 graduates had left the school, and more than 1000 teachers had worked there. The school history in dates: 1670 - Jesuits’ College was built next to Suffering Virgin Mary’s Church. Younger learners were taught reading, spelling, religious singing and prayers while in older classes additionally Latin was taught. Classes were held in the morning and there were no holidays. 1801 - Royal Catholic Junior High School in Opole was founded. Teaching foreign languages was of great importance at school – Latin, Greek, German, Czech, Hebrew and Polish were taught in some classes. It was hard time for those who were not linguistically gifted. For not obeying discipline rules students were punished. The punishment for drinking beer in the pub or playing billiards was imprisonment in a dark cell. For misbehaving towards the school staff learners were dismissed from school.

13 The following subjects were taught: Humanities: statistics, history, religion, philosophy. Science subjects: mathematics, geometry, natural geography, physics and technology. Art subjects: calligraphy, drawing, music. The lowest was the sixth form ‘sexta’ and the highest was the first form ‘prima’. Only three marks were used – 1 very good, 2 – good, 3 – poor, not able to continue education. Only the richest families could afford paying for the children’s education. 1842 - class tutors were introduced – in the top class the headmaster was a tutor. Discipline rules were established. 1937 - The name Gimnazjum Grodzkie was used. 1945 - the first public junior high school and public high school were created. 1947 - Public Industrial School was founded. 1961 - Secondary Vocational School no 2 in Opole was founded 1975 - the name Secondary Technical Mechanical School was introduced
