4 Sentence is of three types according to its form and structure. They are: a) Simple Sentence b)Compound Sentence c)Complex Sentence

5 Simple Sentence : A sentence which has only one Subject, only one Finite verb and Only one clause is called a simple sentence. Nadia is in class nine. Example: Finite verb Subject

6 Finite verb :A finite verb is a verb that completes the sentence’s speech and the form of verb must agree with its Subject in number person. Clause : A group of words that forms part of a sentence, and has a Subject and a Predicate its own, is called a clause. A clause means a part of a sentence having a subject and a predicate of its own. Example : Returning from school, they play in the field. 7 Clause are of three kinds : They are : 1.Principal clause : The principal clause can make a complete sense by itself. It does not have to depend on any other clause. Example : I know where he is. Principal clause 2. Subordinate clause : The clause that is dependent on another clause to make a complete sense is called a Subordinate clause. Example : We know where he is.. Subordinate clause 3. Co-ordinate clause : A sentence having two principal clauses is called Co- ordinate clause. Example : I sent him a letter and he replied. Principal clause

10 Compound Sentence : A compound sentence has more than one principal clause connected by one or more co- ordinating conjunction. Note : In a compound sentence each clause is a principal clause and the following co –ordinating conjunction are usually used in it : and, but, or, both and, not only ……..but also, neither ……. Nor,either…….. Or, otherwise,therefore, on the contrary etc. Example: The man is rich but not happy. More Example : 1)He was not only a poet but also a dramatist. 2)I always help you, on the contrary, you work against me. 3)Neither Rahim nor his brothers are working here.

13 Complex sentence: A complex sentence is one that contains one principal clause with one or more suboridnate clauses Example : 1) We know when he will come. Principal clause Subordinate clause Note : A complex sentence must contain the following conjunctions: that,when, why, who, which, how, where, if, whether, as, because, though, until, unless, before, after, etc. Conjunction
