2  We can accomplish great things and we will including but not limited to producing an outstanding newspaper. In addition we will do the following:  Frequent free writes  Three papers/projects (1 st Amendment, Journalist, Portfolio final)  Monthly articles (for school newspaper … some are self-selected, some are assigned)  Responses to articles/newspaper editorials  Interviewing practice  Research writing– the annotated bibliography – while studying the journalism craft  Various exercises including summaries of news articles to be posted online

3 Reading Texts:  Journalism Matters (National Textbook Company, 2001)  Writing to Deadline: The Journalist at Work (Donald Murray, Heinemann, 2000)  Other: Editing Guide JPROF  Burlington Free Press (a daily subscription is provided to each student)  Articles and editorials from the New York Times, Washington Post and other relevant sources  Ms. White  School Fusion pages

4 I come prepared to provide high quality instruction using various and sundry means of delivering and assessing that instruction. You will always know where you stand and how to get help should you need it. For your part, you bring your enthusiasm, your questions, and your great ideas and we will have no problem exceeding expectations and having a great semester. So, let’s get started…what questions do you have for me?

5 Beginning… Syllabus and more: Please pick up one each of the three documents on the back table…please read it over and ask your questions Survey…please complete (this helps me plan my lessons) Editing guide…use it and do not lose it…feel free to write in it and make sure your name is on it Deadlines…let me tell you a story… Biases…show me what you’ve got… Textbooks et al…sign them out now Take a look at WtD pp.2-5 “An Instinct for Story” Consider: Which of the questions would be the most pressing for you to answer in a story? Please write it down in a clear and concise paragraph… Let’s look at fusion… Homework…read chapter one in JM and “Your Beat” on p. 17 compile the list of 10 politically correct terms and answer question one posed there. Be prepared for a quiz on chapter one Friday. Ask your questions Wednesday.
