The New Imperialism ► In the 1800s, Europe began looking to Africa and Asia for natural resources ► Also looking for new markets to sell their goods in ► This period was called the New Imperialism ► -Europe wants direct control over their colonies and their resources ► European nations competing over land ► European countries believed in Social Darwinism

Colonial Takeover in Southeast Asia ► Beginning of the 1800s only two Asian countries ruled by Europe ► -Spanish Philippines and Dutch East Indies ► By 1900, almost all Asia ruled by Europe ► Britain took over Singapore in 1819, then took over Burma ► French took over Vietnam ► -established a protectorate ► -a country under the protection of another country ► Thailand was not taken over by either, but acted as a buffer btwn the two

Spanish American War ► U.S. went to war with Spain in the late 1800s ► After the war, U.S. owned the Philippines ► Philippines thought that the U.S. would let them rule themselves ► Filipino rebel Emilio Aguinaldo fought against the U.S. and tried to break free, but was defeated ► The U.S. was now in Asia as well

Direct vs. Indirect Rule ► Indirect Rule ► - Colonial power rules through cooperation of local political rulers ► -makes it easier to get natural resources ► -lowers the cost of gov’t. ► - keeps country’s culture intact ► Direct Rule ► - when local leaders won’t cooperate ► - They are replaced by rulers from the colonial power

9. E. Resistance to Colonial Rule ► Many Asians unhappy being governed by Western Powers ► Natives were often used for labor and paid low wages ► Natives were also highly taxed ► Eventually, countries begin to rebel
