2 Tuesday’s Agenda Warm up: Defining CERV Name Game Reading Diagnostic Greensheets Word Parts Homework

3 Warm Up: Define CERV What is CERV? What do you think of reading? Write 5 words that describe your ideas of reading Share them with the class For example: I’m Ursula and I think reading is exciting, relaxing, confidence-building, essential and cool.

4 Name Game Stand in a circle Create body gestures to match your name Repeat all the classmates names / gestures and add your own Number of gestures equals the number of syllables in your name

5 Reading Diagnostic You will read a passage The name of the article is “The Hawaiian Islands” You will be timed Write the “Starting time____” top Write the “Finishing time____” bottom

6 Reading Diagnostic When you finish the reading, turn the page over On the back, answer the question Please do not look back at the passage This is not a test, but a diagnostic If you do not know the answer, guess

7 Greensheet Questions are welcome! Contact information is required Absences are your responsibility Contact a classmate!

8 Word Parts The roots of vocabulary Help you gain a broader understanding For example: Voldemort is from Harry Potter For each word part: 1. Write what it means 2. Draw a picture to go with it 3. Find another word with that part

9 Word Parts: Harry & Voldemort VOL means WISH or WILL MORT means DEATH J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter Voldemort's name begins with "vol" meaning to will or to wish It ends with "mort," which means death The name should tell you about character!

10 Homework Start a vocabulary journal with 5 words Write the word Write the definition Write the Source Write an example sentence Example: grazing to feed on growing grass and pasturage, as do cattle, sheep, etc. Dictionary.com It’s nice to see the cows grazing on the hills

13 HW Review Share your Vocabulary Journal Choose 2 words to write on the board Everyone should follow this format This will be weekly homework

14 Upfront Magazine This will be the periodical that we will be using this semester It comes from The New York Times This is not an ESL magazine It is genuine language You will receive them twice a month on average

15 Upfront Magazine “Driven to Distraction” Read the title, subtitle, and look at the pictures of the article What do you think this article will be about? Discuss with your partner Read the article

16 Warm Up: Word Parts LEV means RAISE UP or MAKE LIGHTER In Harry Potter, the spells use many word parts that reveal their meanings When Ron Weasley says "Wingardium Leviosa!" -- what do you think happens? The “lev” in "leviosa" is a clue…

17 Reading Strategies Skimming & scanning The Problem: Getting stuck on a word Make a decision: Is the word important? The fargengrovin truck is in the yard. Which word don’t you understand? How important is it?

18 Diagnostics Main ideas: 1. Drivers are acting more aggressively 2. More cars are being sold 3. More inexperienced drivers on the road What is the most important one?

19 Homework Read the article that you are assigned from the current Upfront magazine 2010: America & the World Your Diet & Global Warming

20 Vocabulary Game Objectives Descriptive adjectives Nouns in categories Have fun! Directions Guess what the word is by using your classmates’ clues Things that are: Soft Electronic Artistic Liquid Colorful Dangerous Academic Romantic Wild
