Electricity and Magnetism Unit Review

Parts of an atom -There are three parts of an atom: protons, neutron, and electrons. -Protons have a positive charge -electrons have a negative charge, and are the smallest parts of the atom -neutrons possess no net charge.

Electricity -the work of atomic electric particles called electrons -comes from the Greek word for amber which is “electron” -everything around us, including our bodies contain electrons -examples of electricity in nature: olightning oelectric eels oNorthern Lights

Static and Current Electricity There are two kinds of electricity: 1.Static electricity- a single electric charge that doesn’t move in a current. It comes from the surface of objects. 2.Current electricity- the particles move through objects or substances. It is a flow of electricity. Electricity has two different charges: a)Negative (-) b)Positive (+) Charges that are same (+ +, or - -) push each other away or repel. Charges that are different (+ -) pull each other closer or attract.

Insulators and Conductors Conductors - In a conductor, electricity can flow freely Insulator - In an insulator, electricity cannot flow freely

Series and Parallel Circuits -A series circuit has only one path for electrons to flow. A parallel circuit has two or more paths for current to flow through.

Magnets ●an object that gives off a magnetic force oMagnetic field - the area of magnetic force ●comes in many forms: ohorseshoe, bar magnet, or different shapes ●have two poles- north and south oopposite poles attract each other ●only attract iron, cobalt, or nickel

Electromagnets Electromagnetism ●‘temporary magnets’ ●moving electrons generate a magnetic field and this moving electric field generates electricity ●is useful for two reason: (a)the strength of the electromagnetic field can be altered by the current producing it (b)can turn an electromagnetic field on or off at will.
