2 STATUS OF ACADEMIC AS WELL AS INDUSTRIAL LIBRARIANS IN WESTERN PART OF INDIA Purpose of Study :  To find the reasons and factors for librarians not getting a faculty status.  To search some suggestions for librarians to get the faculty status. Methodology :  Literature review  Suggestions from Lib. Professional discussion forum.  Survey through questionnaire : online as well as face to face discussion with Librarians.

8 STATUS OF ACADEMIC AS WELL AS INDUSTRIAL LIBRARIANS IN WESTERN PART OF INDIA Stretch support : It is very interesting that librarians are now not only managing the library, they are also helping researchers to complete their research in many ways : - By assisting them to find out relevant source information. - By helping them to get the relevant information. - By doing literature survey to assist the researcher. - By guiding them on research documentation. And many more… So we can find that librarians are doing the same duty as a guide for research would do.

11 STATUS OF ACADEMIC AS WELL AS INDUSTRIAL LIBRARIANS IN WESTERN PART OF INDIA Treatment from Management : Responsibility of librarian. Factors are :  Entry level pay scale and status : It is found that there are lots of librarians accepting job by compromising with status and salary. That may be for recession of Job market in this field.  Under qualified/semi qualified librarians have negative impact on qualified librarians.  Poor communication as well as leadership ability of librarian. This is also true for their performance.  Academic qualification is not the real willingness of some librarians. Some respondents have chosen the qualification for not getting chance to any other degree. Some librarians increase their academic qualifications by Distance learning course from private institution while doing library job. They were appointed in library even though they were not having any library science qualification.

12 STATUS OF ACADEMIC AS WELL AS INDUSTRIAL LIBRARIANS IN WESTERN PART OF INDIA Suggestions for Librarians :  Librarians have to respects themselves. They should not accept any non-standard wages. The wage structure should be comparable to faculty, scientists and engineer or doctors.  Librarians should try to prove that library services are an indispensable part of academic sector. He should be proactive to lead some managerial decisions in relation to library services which will be beneficial for the Institution.  A good vision of library service is to be made. Librarians are to act to fulfil the vision of library services. They should not only concentrate the essential library services. The other related or anticipatory library services are also expected. They should rate those services in calculating their service performance.  Librarians are to be given authority for decision making for the development of library and its services.

13 STATUS OF ACADEMIC AS WELL AS INDUSTRIAL LIBRARIANS IN WESTERN PART OF INDIA  Librarian, LIS institution and library association should make effective effort to develop a better image of the role of librarian as an academic staff.  Librarians should prove themselves more essential for students’ uplift. Librarians should analyse the information needs of his users. They should give the proper guidance to the users about relevant information sources.  Librarians should have very good interpersonal skill and develop the ability to take decisions for the development of library and its services.  An anticipatory information service depending upon the users’ demand is good to enhance the image of library as a teacher.  A self-assessment is required about the communication with faculty. Librarians should always try to eliminate the communication barriers with faculty.  Class room orientation of library service or educating users about library resources would me an important key for making library as an indispensible part of institution.
