Geography 11/8 to 11/12

+ GEOGRAPHY GRADE 9 November 8th, 2015 DO NOW: Write the date and the question….. What are the solstice and equinox? How do they impact the seasons? Use your textbook! (8 MINUTES timed) No TALKING, it will affect your Behavior Grade Collected on Thursday CLASS RULES: 1.BE PREPARED (Text, Folder, Pens, Planner) 2.Remain Seated 3.Raise your hand quietly 4.No bathroom, locker, bag visits 5. Be Respectful, NO arguing or Talking back 6. Leave completed work on first desk as you leave class. OBJECTIVE: Introduction to Earth Movement and Weather Patterns EXIT TICKET: What is a solstice? Write it down in your student agenda. Check as leaving class HOMEWORK: Complete Chapter 3 Section 1 Handout- posted on Powerschool WRITE IT DOWN!

What is happening here?

What do you know about the movement of the earth? How does it move? Where does it move? Explain. Think about what makes a year? A day? Cornell Notes: Topic: seasons and weather Objective: understand how the earth’s rotation and revolution impacts the seasons Essential Question: How does the tilt of the earth impact the different seasons?

Chapter 3.1 Seasons and Weather What causes the seasons? Earth is tilted at 23.5 degrees and rotates around it’s axis (rotation) As it move around the sun (revolution), different areas receive different amounts of sunlight for more hours a day. This causes the seasons. Page 49

Chapter 3.1 Seasons and Weather Where does the sun shine most directly? Equator Tropic of Cancer – 23.5 degrees north latitude Tropic of Capricorn – 23.5 degrees south latitude These two lines of latitude are the further points north and south that the sun’s rays shine directly overhead at noon.

Chapter 3.1 Seasons and Weather Solstice: 2 days a year on which the sun’s direct sunlight shines on either the tropic of cancer or the tropic of Capricorn. Summer solstice (northern hemisphere): June 21/22 – longest day of the year – sun shines at tropic of cancer Winter solstice (northern hemisphere): December 22/23 – shortest day of the year – sun shines at tropic of Capricorn Equinox: 2 days of the year where night and day are equal length everywhere on earth. Mark start of spring and autumn – sun shines directly on the equator. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLRA87TKXLM

+ GEOGRAPHY GRADE 9 November 9th, 2015 DO NOW: Write the date and the question….. What causes different types of weather? Give examples. Use your textbooks! OBJECTIVE: Examine Earth Movements and Weather/Seasons EXIT TICKET: What is climate? Write it down in your student agenda. Check as leaving class HOMEWORK: WRITE IT DOWN! Read Chapter 3 Section 2 QUIZ Ch. 3 Next Thursday, Nov. 19th

Hurricanes Storms that form over warm, tropical ocean waters (typhoons in Asia) Air flowing over ocean temperatures of 80 degrees F. (about 27 Celsius) picks up huge amounts of moisture and heat energy Weather extremes

Hurricanes Continued Winds flow into low pressure (cold air) and create an “eye” “Eye” is about 10-20 miles (16-32km) across with calm, clear skies Wind around the “eye” can reach 200mph (320km/h) The clouds and winds can stretch up to 500 miles (833km) Hits land = violent storm Weather extremes

Tornadoes Powerful funnel-shaped column of spiraling air Form quickly (mix of cold and warm air) Winds 300mph (500km/h) Usually small in diameter (300ft – about 100m) and only last a few minutes Largest 1 mile (1.6km) in diameter and lasted for hours Weather extremes

Blizzards Heavy snowstorm – winds 35mph (58 km/h) Colorado – within 24 hours accumulated 76 inches of snow (6ft, 4 inches or about 2 meters) California - 7 days storm dumped 189 inches (16 ft – about 5 meters) Weather extremes

Drought Long period of time with little or no rain Floods Water spreads over land that is not usually covered in water

+ GEOGRAPHY GRADE 9 November 10 th / 11th, 2015 DO NOW: Write the date and the question….. What is the difference between weather and climate? Use your textbooks! OBJECTIVE: Examining Climate EXIT TICKET: What is the eye of the hurricane? Write it down in your student agenda. Check as leaving class HOMEWORK: WRITE IT DOWN! Chapter 3 Section 2 complete all questions

What are some weather extremes? How do they impact our lives?

Wind Currents Distribute heat through convection Convection: transfer of heat in the atmosphere by upward motion of air Sunlight in atmosphere heats and expands creating an area of low pressure Cool dense air in high pressure rushes under the low pressure causing wind. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBqohRu2RRk Factors affecting climate

Wind Currents Warm air moves towards the poles and cold air moves towards the equator. Winds don’t move in a straight line because the earth is rotating (page 54) Factors affecting climate

Ocean Currents Move in large circular systems Warm water moves towards the poles and cold water moves towards the equator Page 55 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_8 mw-1HYFg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_8 mw-1HYFg Factors affecting climate

What are some ways in which ocean and wind currents impact the climate?

Factors affecting climate Zones of Latitude Low/tropical (near equator – warmer) Middle/temperate (between 23.5 and 75 degrees – warm and cold) High/polar (75-90 degrees – cold) Elevation As altitude increases, temperature drops 3.5 degrees F for every 1,000ft

Factors affecting climate 11/9 Topography/Landforms also impact the climate (especially mountains – winds with a lot of moisture cool near mountains causing rains) What is an example from the movie? How do the Himalayas impact the climate in southeast Asia?

Explain the difference between the winter and summer solstice. Be specific and give details.

Do the 3.1 Assessment questions 1-4. After the class work— Video Link: https://youtu.be/6vgvTeuoDWYhttps://youtu.be/6vgvTeuoDWY Video Link: https://youtu.be/BLR-DtxfHPYhttps://youtu.be/BLR-DtxfHPY Write at least 5 facts in your notes from each video.
