2 WHAT IS TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP? Defined as “a leadership style focused on effecting revolutionary change in organizations through a commitment to the organization’s vision.” Four Characteristics of Transformational Leaders  Idealized Influence leading by example, acting confidently, emphasizing, & reinforcing values  Inspirational Motivation encouragement, motivational speeches, & stimulating teamwork  Intellectual Stimulation encouraging innovation & creativity & fostering a climate that favors critical thinking  Individualized Consideration listening, recognition, motivation by praising and thanking, & distributing fair work loads

5 BRITISH OCCUPATION OF INDIA  Challenge the process - Gandhi saw the hardship of the Indigo growers, the poverty of many Indians, and the lack of economic independence  Inspire a Shared Vision - Gandhi gave speeches about the poverty in India and the importance of becoming economically independent  Enable Others to Act - Gandhi told his followers stop buying British, to make their own clothes, and to burn western clothing  Model the Way - Gandhi made all of his own clothes and only wore what he made - Also, he led the salt march to represent that Indians could make their own salt instead of relying on it from the British Indians lacked economic independence because they relied on British goods instead of Indian- made ones. Gandhi, an effective leader, helped to solve this problem.

6 IDEALIZED INFLUENCE Gandhi was a leader that was able to greatly influence his followers in many ways. Leading by example Acting confidently Emphasizing values and reinforcing them through symbolic actions Having a high level of ethical and moral conduct Gandhi lead by example throughout the movement. When violent situations would arise, he wouldn’t fight back, but instead remained calm. He was confident when he was being sent to jail; every time officers would appear, he showed no fear. He expressed his values by fasting as a way to discourage the violence and non-cooperation within his followers. Throughout the entire movement, he constantly stressed the need to refrain from violence, and instead, peacefully protest.

7 THE PARTITION OF INDIA Challenge the Process Mohammad Jinnah wants separate countries for the Muslims and Indians. Inspire a Shared Vision Gandhi inspired non-violence and reconciliation by saying he was Muslim, Hindu, Jew, and Christian and that everyone is a child of God. Enable Others to Act Jinnah is offered the role of prime minister in an attempt to keep India unified. Model the Way Gandhi fasts until all of the rioting and violence ceases among the Hindu and Muslim groups.

8 THE LEADERSHIP OF GANDHI Transformational leadership refines people’s visions and renews their commitment. Transformational leadership restructures their systems for goal accomplishment through a relationship of mutual stimulation that converts followers into leaders and leaders into moral agents. In the most simple of ways, Gandhi is shown to be a transformational leader because when he sees something that is unjust, he tries to change it in an ethical manner.
