1 Forms of Energy

2 What is energy? Ability to do work or cause change Produces Warmth
Produces Light Produces Sound Produces Movement Produces Growth Powers Technology

3 KINETIC POTENTIAL Classes of Energy Energy of motion
Stored energy or energy of position Motion, Electrical, Sound, Radiant, Thermal Gravitational, Stored Mechanical, Nuclear, Chemical

4 Potential Energy Potential- energy an object has due to position or shape a stretched rubber band a popper before it pops winding a music box

5 Gravitational Energy Potential Energy
-Definition: Energy of position or place Example: Rock resting at top of a hill Energy Resource: Hydropower- water in a reservoir behind a dam/waterfalls

6 Stored Mechanical Energy
Potential Energy Stored Mechanical Energy -Definition: stored in an object by the application of force Example: Compressed springs, stretched rubber bands Energy Resource:

7 Nuclear Energy Potential Energy
-Definition: energy stored in the nucleus of an atom Fission- the dividing of the nucleus of an atom Fusion- the joining of the nucleus of atoms Example: The sun uses fusion to produce light. Energy Resource: Nuclear Energy

8 Potential Energy Chemical Energy –
-Definition: The energy stored in a substance that can be released when the substance reacts. Example: Smores: When you burn wood, chemical energy is released. This energy is used to toast marshmallows. The sugar in the marshmallows also has chemical energy that gets absorbed by your body. Energy Resource: biomass, coal, petroleum, natural gas and propane

9 2 Types of Energy Kinetic- energy of motion; all moving objects have kinetic energy a moving tortoise a car you running/walking

10 Mechanical (Motion) Energy
Kinetic Energy Mechanical (Motion) Energy -Definition: movement of objects or substances from one place to another Energy Resource: Wind Energy and Hydropower .

11 Electrical Energy Kinetic Energy
Electrical Energy -Definition: movement of electrons (negatively charged particles) Electrons move from the electrical outlet through a wire to produce electricity. Example: Lightning, Electricity Energy Resource:

12 Sound Energy Kinetic Energy
-Definition: – movement of energy through substances in the form of longitudinal/compression waves Example: energy from an object is transferred to the air around it causing the air particles to vibrate ultimately causing your eardrum to vibrate allowing you to hear the sound. Energy Resource:

13 Radiant (light) Energy
Kinetic Energy Radiant (light) Energy -Definition: electromagnetic energy that travels in transverse waves -Example: Can be transmitted through a vacuum Includes visible light, x-rays, radio waves Energy Resource: Solar

14 Thermal Energy Kinetic Energy i.e. temperature
-Definition: All matter is made of particles that are continually moving, kinetic energy. -Example: The higher the temperature, the more kinetic energy, therefore the more thermal energy The lower the temperature, the less kinetic energy, therefore the less thermal energy Energy Resource: Geothermal

15 Energy Transfers Law of Conservation of Energy
Energy can not be created or destroyed, only changed/transferred.
