7 Verbes –ir  Drop the –ir and the endings  For example look at the endings on the verb finir  Finir – to finish  Je finisnous finissons  Tu finisvous finissez  Il finitils finissent

8 Other –ir verbs to know  Maigrir – to lose weight  Grossir – to gain weight  Choisir – to choose (nous choisissons)  réussir à – to succeed, to pass  Grandir – to grow  Réfléchir – to reflect  Obéir – to obey  Désobéir – to disobey

9 -cer/-ger verbs  Manger - Nous mangeons  Other verbs like that – nager – to swim, ranger – to pick up, changer – to change, voyager – to travel, encourager –to encourage, corriger – to correct  Commencer – **nous commençons**  Commencer – to begin, start, placer – to place/put, prononcer – to pronounce, remplacer – to replace, lancer – to throw, avancer – to go forward

11 Le + days of the week  Je chante lundi - I am singing on Monday.  Just the day of the week – this coming day this week.  Je chante le lundi – I sing on Mondays.  Le + day – every week on that day

12 Accent changing –er verbs  Some –er verbs change accents – préférer, répéter are both verbs that do that. – the nous and vous form look like the infinitive (the verb when it has the –er on the end) In the other forms the é right before the –er is the one that changes to è  Je préfèrenous préférons  Tu préfères vous préférez  Il préfère ils préfèrent

14 -er accent adding verbs  Some verbs like acheter – don’t have an accent, but you add è for the je, tu, il, elle, on, elles and ils forms. The nous and vous forms are the same as the infinitive.  J’achètenous achetons  Tu achètesvous achetez  Il achèteils achètent  Elle achèteelles achètent  On achète  Other verbs like acheter-to buy, amener –to bring somone, emmener – to take someone, lever –to raise, promener – to walk

15 Adjectives used as nouns  Sooo easy in French if you remember adjective agreement!!!  In english we say, Do you want the green or white backpack? I’d like the green one.  In French – je préfère le vert. (basically just remove sac à dos from in between le and vert)  So here’s how it works – whatever item is “the one” in English – determines in French if you use le, la, les – and how the end of the adjective looks – vert, verte, verts, vertes.  ** the question in French- tu veux le sac à dos vert ou blanc? **

16 Examples  Je vais acheter les feuilles de papier blanches. Et toi?  Je préfère les jaunes. / les vertes  Tu aimes la calculatrice verte ou violette?  J’aime la violette!  Use the adjective as a noun to tell what you prefer - les stylos / bleu ou vert :  Je préfère les bleus.
