2 In the late 19 th Century there was violence against Chinese up and down the West Coast of the United States Chinese were had their businesses destroyed, they were driven out of town, and were murdered by mobs of angry white people In 1877 there was a 2 day riot in San Francisco that resulted in 4 deaths and the destruction of $100,000 in Chinese property They had little help from the law since they could not testify in court and usually found the police uncooperative The worst single incidence of violence took place in Los Angeles right off of the Plaza next to Olvera Street in 1871

3 Chinatown was centered on Calle de Los Negros. It was the home of non-white residents, not just the Chinese.
