3 Waste Collection Services Current Refuse Collection Service provision: Weekly Collection of domestic waste – grey bin Fortnightly Collection of recyclables – blue bin and caddy Seasonal Service for green waste – green bin Alternate Weekly Collections: Week 1 - domestic waste Week 2 - recyclables No changes to green waste collections

4 National and Regional position Over 64% of Councils now provide Alternate Weekly Collections Northumberland, Durham and Gateshead already successfully operate this service Newcastle are changing their collection services from April 2013 Sunderland are retaining weekly collections following a government inducement

5 Trial in Whitburn & Marsden Area from September (1500 props) Positive Outcomes: Recycling tonnages have increased +14% Refuse tonnages have decreased –16% Minimal problems encountered by crew and public. Positive response from public and collection crews Very small number of complaints Very few residents put out excess waste (incl Christmas period) Alternate Weekly Collections – Whitburn & Marsden Trial

6 100k less kilometres travelled by our Refuse Collection fleet 60,000 litres fuel saved Reduction in landfill down to 31,500 tonnes each year Reduction over 3 million kgs of CO2 emissions. AWC gives us the opportunity to increase recycling - currently 38%, 2015 45% Environmental Benefits of A.W.C

7 Illustrative Cost Comparison Disposal of our domestic Refuse from April 2013 will be £89 per tonne Processing of our Recycling from April 2013 will be £0 per tonne
