What is an EXTREME ENVIRONMENT? It would be -good if you can identify the main characteristics of an extreme environment. -even better if you could provide a definition of extreme environments. -amazing if you could appreciate the differences between different extreme environments. Settler – write the date, copy the title and the underlined parts of the outcomes. Underline your date and title neatly. Thank you.

1. Where were each of these pictures taken? 2. Do you know anyone famous (dead or alive) who has explored these places? A DC B These are ALL extreme environments

A DC B Mountains – the higher up you go the less oxygen there is. It is also much colder. Deserts can be boiling hot or freezing cold or both (hot in the day and freezing at night). There is also a lack of drinking water. Mars – the warmest day on Mars is as warm as the coldest day on earth. There is also a lack of oxygen. Polar – the south pole is as dry as a desert. Snow and ice have accumulated there over thousand of years. It is also VERY COLD brrrrrr!

EXTREME ENVIRONMENT REMOTE HAZARDOUS Match the key words to the definitions. A person or animal’s natural surroundings. Characteristics of a place that is on the edge of the range, as far from average as possible. Very risky and dangerous. Located far away from other things/places.

Extreme Environments. Copy and complete the title and mind map. Title – A mind map to show the factors that define an extreme environment with named examples. Hint - It would be amazing if you explained why for each example. Antarctica because it is so cold that vegetation will not grow and therefore food is scarce. Difficult for people to survive. Hazardous. Unstable Landscape Harsh climate. Remote Give a named example and explain why it is unstable. Helpful tip – use pages 2- 3 (green book) if you get stuck.

Read independently through page 5 (green book). Write a short story about climbing a mountain in Britain. Choose a real mountain and think about travel and accommodation. Talk about things that make it extreme (rocky ground, steep slopes, weather). Extension

To end – Rank these areas from most to least extreme. 1.Choose 3-5 factors from your mind map to judge how extreme each environment is. 2.Rank the environments from 1-4 for each factor you choose. 3.Add your rank scores together to put the environments in order. A DC B
