1 School Design Education Burnley – The Way Forward

2 Creating the brief Good school design is based on establishing the right brief. Guidance based on sound experience developed over a period of time is used to inform this process The workshops will consider how to establish and develop the briefs for the new schools.

3 Designing new schools We have very good guidance on the number, type and layout of spaces required to serve curriculum needs based on group size and pupil numbers. There is also a plethora of legislation around the design of buildings - e.g. Planning, building and health and safety regulations.

4 One of the key objectives behind designing schools for the future is to provide buildings which inspire and motivate those that learn and work within them and contribute to the communities they serve. Our vision is also to create a parity of esteem across the schools School Design

5 Inspirational buildings How do we incorporate the ‘WOW’ factor in our new schools? What makes a building inspirational and able to motivate and promote the esteem of children and staff? There are many buildings which inspire us. Here are just a few examples………..

7 Examine how the design of the new schools can contribute to the motivation of staff and children. Design buildings which remove blockages to fulfilling individuals potential Maslow’s hierarchy of needs - how might this be applied to the school environment? Maslow and Design

9 Dining facilities/ food halls/ internet cafes? warm/ dry classrooms/ air conditioned ICT suites good lighting, tactile surfaces, stimulating colours, display areas for art facilities for internal/external sports and play, drama, dance and music. 14 Your role Briefing for the new schools is expected to commence in spring 2005. The purpose of the workshops is to outline the design process and to explore how to include governors, staff, children and other stakeholders in achieving a design that best meets their needs and aspirations

15 Workshop Questions How do we find out what inspires and motivates our young people? How do we engage children,staff, governors and the community in the design process? How do we avoid raising expectations beyond what can be delivered? (Framework) What facilities would help improve links with the local community and be welcoming to all?
