We offer some programmes through distance learning, and have developed a series of exciting Top Up/final year completion programmes for international students. 10. The School of Arts and Social Sciences has a vibrant and internationally renowned research culture. We have a reputation for high quality, innovative research and have strengths in many research fields including public policy, art history, Fine Art, politics, history etc. Activity in our centres of research excellence makes a significant contribution to advances in the arts, public services and the professions, nationally and internationally. The School hosts a number of international conferences and symposiums. We continually develop our research and link it to our teaching. AN INTENSIVE PROGRAMME developed specifically to meet the needs of international students who would like to undertake PhD research in the subject areas of Media, Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. Particularly designed for international students who have excellent academic qualifications from their country of origin but may not be prepared for the fundamental differences between overseas and UK education systems. Students who apply to us for PhDs often have very good research ideas but are often unable to articulate these in the required academic language or within the required theoretical or methodological framework and language expected within UK institutions. The programme will allow these students to reach their full potential and obtain a place on a PhD Programme.

18. Students will undertake a bespoke training package that is specifically related to their chosen subject area of research. This will include a postgraduate research methods module, research seminars and lectures, and research contextualized English. Research Methods Module  Students join an existing research methods module and integrate with UK students in an area relative to their research interest. For example: History, Literature, Linguistics, Social Sciences, and Arts. These modules cover theoretical and methodological frameworks necessary for research study and students being able to articulate their ideas when completing the Initial Project Application.

19. Research Seminars and Lectures  Your research supervisor will design a personalized training plan with you that includes seminars, lectures and academic reading that will specifically aid in the development and articulation of your research ideas. Contextualized English  Language classes will contextualize research ideas, methods and research management in a way that provides a clear focus on the advanced written and spoken skills required to effectively succeed at doctoral level.

20. THE INITIAL PROJECT APPROVAL (IPA) WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT? Research degrees at Northumbria are structured around a series of key compulsory milestones that assist the student to complete their programme in a timely way. The IPA is the first milestone and needs to be successfully completed to allow students to embark on their research project.

21. Flexible programme with 3 entry points Entry point 1 (27 weeks – enrolment Monday 13 th June 2011) Students with an IELTS of 5.5 will undertake a 5 week dedicated English Language course prior to beginning the programme below.£6,200 Entry point 2 (21 weeks – enrolment Monday 18 th July 2011 ) Students with an IELTS of 6.0 undertake an integrated programme of research methodology, research skills, contextualized English, IPA development and English development to 6.5 IELTS. £4,900 Entry point 3 (15 weeks - semester 1) Students with an IELTS of 6.5 or above will complete the programme over one semester. £3,600

22. O N THE SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION of the programme students will be allowed to undertake PhD study in their chosen area of research in the School of Arts and Social Sciences. As an incentive and reward for students undertaking a PhD in SASS for each year of PhD study completed students will be refunded £1,200 annually (for 3 years).
