Welcome to the Tomlinscote Sixth Form College Open Evening Tuesday 20 th October 2015 Please collect your individual pack of information from the Bee Hive next door (alphabetised by parent name for internal students, non-Tomlinscote students separate)

Our aims for this evening To give students and parents an overview of our 6 th Form To hear from current Year 12 and 13 students about their experiences in the 6 th Form To consider the benefits of staying on at our 6 th Form To start to research courses and speak with departments about choices

Format of this evening 7.00-7.30 p.m.Formal presentation (Main Hall) 7.30-9.00 p.m. Subject tours round departmental bases (Maps of the site and locations of departments included in envelopes)

A-Level pathway: Over 30 AS/A-levels on offer from the traditional, academic subjects such as History, English, Physics etc to the more modern subjects such as Electronics and Psychology Entry requirements- at least 5 GCSE grades A*-C BTEC pathway: Some students study a range of BTEC courses alongside A-Levels. There are several BTECs on offer such as Creative & Media and Sport & Exercise Science Entry requirements- at least 3 GCSE grades A*-C Vocational pathway: A range of professional, work related options are available to students in our state of the art Vocational Building. These range from Hairdressing to Soccer Coaching to Professional Catering Entry requirements- no set number of GCSE grade passes but a passion for the subject students wish to study is essential A flexible and unique curriculum offer

Government changes to post-16 courses: AS/A-Level from Sept. 2015 Summarised on information sheet provided in envelopes For some subjects, new specifications and changes to assessment began in Sept. 2015, other subjects (apart from Maths) begin in Sept. 2016 AS is separate from the A level – still counts as a ‘stand alone’ qualification

What is Tomlinscote’s A-Level curriculum offer for September 2016? The vast majority of students will take FOUR A-level choices Students will be entered for AS Levels in all their subjects in the summer of 2017 Students will, therefore, gain stand alone AS qualifications in all four subjects then decide which three they will continue into a ‘full’ A- level Other Colleges in the immediate local area are offering only 3 A- level programmes (NO AS exams) – we are still committed to the flexibility of 4 AS Levels

What is achievement like at Tomlinscote 6 th Form? Progress Progress - We see this as critical for your sons and daughters It measures how far all students move – the brightest and those who find advanced study more of a challenge The most recent figures show students gain almost a quarter of a grade more than similar students nationally In the top 25% of Surrey Schools and better than local designated 6 th Form Colleges.

What is achievement like at Tomlinscote 6 th Form? Outcomes Outcomes – One student had to choose between Oxford and Harvard and received an award for the best student of Spanish in the country! Another was predicted 3 ‘D’ grades and didn’t apply to University- but achieved 3 ‘B’ grades so has now gone to University through ‘clearing’ Vocational results were very strong, students passed in all subjects! 49% of grades were A*, A or B 72% of grades were C or above The pass rate was 98%

Personalised support and monitoring of students Personalised tutorial programme Focused Briefings and group tutorials centred around support, coping with transition, study skills etc New reporting system- more regular, more robust, more accurate

What support and guidance is offered at Tomlinscote 6 th Form? Mrs Sutton- Careers and IAG, work experience and non-university routes Asst. Heads of 6 th Form (Miss Ellis & Mrs Summers (UCAS support, ‘OXBRIDGE’) Tutor based system- regular contact at various points throughout the week

Application process and next steps… Application forms are in your envelopes this evening Deadline for all applications to be received is FRIDAY 4 th DECEMBER 2015 Interviews with all applicants will commence in January 2016 – all applicants will be advised of the outcome of their application in writing shortly after interview Taster Days- early July 2016
