2 SOUTH TYNESIDE YOUNG PEOPLE’S PARLIAMENT 27 members stay in post 2 years Referred to the Parliament by agencies Training offered to all members/accreditation Manage and support Borough-wide Secondary School Council Support to the Children in Care Council Support to the CASH group(Community Action Supporting Homelessness) Run our own Youth Surgeries Consultation using Youth Bus, Forums, Events Community Area Forums Refugee and Asylum Seeker Drop In Project Intergenerational Project ‘Handing On History’ Local Democracy Week Debates UK Youth Parliament/National Youth Agency 1 full time Project Manager/Support Worker 1-1 support offered to all members 12 Voluntary Peer Mentors/Trainers (age17/19)

4 Volunteer Peer Mentor 8 months 1-1 support Issues: Loss and Bereavement Achievements: Watersports; Young Fire Fighters; Mentor with Parliament. 2 Year College Course – Diploma in Sports 480 hours volunteering

5 What Young People Tell Us… 5 Schools took part in a survey top issues were: Take Democracy into schools before we are 18 (Our Democratic Team listened and are doing this). Councillors to visit schools and youth clubs Show young people how voting makes a difference in their neighbourhoods – make it real. Make it colourful and exciting Explain how policies effect young people? Tell us how it is, so we understand Tell young people what Councillors do. Politics is not focused on young people - we can’t vote till 18. Political education through entertainment NO POLITICAL JARGON!

6 Young People’s Concerns aged 13 – 17 years of age Mental Health Issues linked to loss and bereavement Financial Worries in the home Places to go after 9pm (somewhere safe and someone to talk to – Youth Café Idea) Pressures of exams/doing well at school Feeling safe on the streets at night Bullying issues:at home/school

7 What We Love about South Tyneside! The people and our sense of humour The Town Centre and the Beach Schools – new buildings/good teachers Support from Youth Workers/Sports Workers Lots of things for young people to do Excellent Summer Programme We get to meet our councillors and get lots of support (Political Speed Dating!) Seem to be more police on the streets – feels safer
