1 EXAMPLE THESIS WITH QUOTES AND SCENES EXAMPLES FOR THE GREAT GATSBY COMPARISON ESSAY

2 Thesis for essay Character thesis: George Wilson as a character is Fitzgerald’s portrayal of the lower class as people that are ignorant, aimless, and abused and this is presented in both the novel and film. Symbol thesis: Within both the novel and film, The Great Gatsby, pearls carry the theme of materialism and are present in how Tom Buchanan creates connections to his lovers.

3 BOOK George Wilson He was a blond, spiritless man, anemic, and faintly handsome. ( chapter 2) “I thought he knew something about breeding, but he wasn’t fit to lick my shoe.”( chapter 2) “I just got wised up to something funny the last two days,” remarked Wilson. (chapter 7) Pearls he gave her a string of pearls valued at three hundred and fifty thousand dollars. (chapter 4) She groped around in a waste- basket she had with her on the bed and pulled out the string of pearls. “Take ’em down-stairs and give ’em back to whoever they belong to. Tell ’em all Daisy’s change’ her mine. Say: ‘Daisy’s change’ her mine!’.” (chapter 4) Then he went into the jewelry store to buy a pearl necklace — or perhaps only a pair of cuff buttons — rid of my provincial squeamishness forever. ( chapter 9)

4 Movie George Wilson In the film, George is not aware of the advances Tom is making on his wife, though he is 5 feet away. George’s confrontation with Myrtle is expanded in the film, both end with her escaping; however, in the film she physically hits him. In the film, we see Tom specifically blame Gatsby for everything. Pearls Daisy’s pearls are shown in the same fashion as the book but the camera pans in on Daisy’s neutral face. In the film we see the pearls stringed and piece together as Gatsby’s letter falls apart. Myrtle Wilson death in highlighted by the pearls scattering around her body.
